GTX 690 or R9 290?

RobertElkHunter

I have been looking through criagslist and ebay among other sites for a replacement for my 580. The two I have norrowed it down to are GTX 690 or a 290 (non x) from the help of @thekeemo

My system is:

  • Asus Crosshair V
  •
  • 6GB Mushkin RAM
  •
  • Nvidia Geforce GTX580
  •
  • Define R4
  •
  • 1TB HDD
  •
  • EVGA GS650

Which would be better? The 690 is $135 the 290 is $150.

Upgrade your RAM, 8GB is usually recommended and you can get 8GB for $35USD. Do that and a 690.

Ok.

Just remember that the 690 is a Dual-GPU card with two Kepler-based GTX 680 cores.

I used to be quite active here.

EDIT: Woops, yes you have a good PSU, thought you had a cheap Cooler Master unit.

Well, I say 8GB RAM with that $15 you'll save by getting the 690.

I wouldn't get a 690 with how badly Nvidia supports old SLI setups. the 690 is also incompatable with dx12, where as the 290 will be partially compatable.

That said I would buy the 690 to play around with, but the 290 to game.

Explain why I should keep that in mind.

It will be worse in some games because it won't use SLI, only a single core. At that point you have a gtx 680. Also as I said above the 690 isn't compatable with dx12. I would have bought one but for that.

They are super cool to look at, but they are dated.

Some games have bad SLI support, and NVidia hates Kepler with a passion. It won't last long.

The GTX 690 is compatible with DX12.

690, because it's a 600 series card, and we all know the 600 series is almost as cool as the 8800gtx.

Looks like they added it recently, my bad. Wasn't planned on happening when I checked this summer.

I'm very sure that the plan from the beginning with NVIDIA in regards to DX12 was to make everything from Fermi and on compatible. It's funny though, I'm kind of tempted to get a couple of GTX 580s or a GTX 590 because of that. DX11 games will probably struggle a little, but the DX12 games should be fine so long as DX12 games won't naturally come with much higher VRAM usage.

290 is better for gaming, you won't have to deal with the horrors of sli. 290 also is more powerful than 1 680 core and it has 4GB of vram

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

-Crapbook

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

Explain why I should keep that in mind.

Less vram per card (vram doesnt stack)

some games dont scale well etc

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

Thanks for all the help, I am going with a 690 and 8GB ram upgrade.

Keep in mind - 690 uses quite a bit of power, more than a 290 by quite a bit - 650W might not be enough for it.

I would get the 290. My rule is always (Linus says it as well BTW) get the SINGLE most powerful card you can afford. Since the 690 is basically two cards you will have scaling issues, might have micro stutter etc. The 290 is just a raw performance beast and is great bang for the buck.

I believe a single 680 was around 250W so 2 of them might need about 500W + 120W for the rest of the system, I'd say a good 750W is in order to provide a buffer in case of spikes and surges.

I already just got a 650 Watt G2, I had a corsair CX that broke. I am SOL on that front. I guess I'll go with a 290 and wait for a RAM upgrade (I seem to not use that much, but it is a good idea to upgrade.)

290 will offer double the frame buffer as well as negate any SLI issues
