For that price range I would recommend AMD, but if you insist Nvidia then yeah do your thing (960/970).

Best nvidia gpu for 300 dollar will be the GTX 970. You can get the superclock ACX 2.0 version on Amazon for amazing price of 340 dollar wow.

if you can't fit a GTX 970 on the budget maybe look for a used one, or a GTX 780 or 780ti those all perform very well in games and will run on that PSU.

A GPU is really something you can buy used with confidence, especially nvidia ones you can be sure they only gamed since that's all they are very good for...they work for a long ass time and will retain all the performance, so buying used is really not a problem so long as it works it'll keep working.

you can find used 970s for a bit less than $300

this would be the best option because it uses less power than an AMD card so even with your crappy PSU it would be ok

Get a ~600/500W PSU from XFX/SeaSonic or EVGA's GS/G2/B2 series. Then spend the remaining money on a 380 4gb or 290/290x if you can find one.

would a 780 work on a 550 watt psu

i use a 550W with an overclocked i7-4770K and overclcoked GTX780 without any issues the PSU won't even get hot but then again it's a very high end model built by seasonic sold by XFX it's the XFX XTR 550W 80+gold...so yeah..

PSU it's not only about the ''number'' it's about build quality ;)

pls invest in a better psu before gpu

I am getting the card in November, probably a gtx 970 and the bear minimum is 500 watts, that's what I have, would it hurt to have the psu in there for just another month with the 970

If you're sticking on 500W just get a 970

It's unrated? I'd buy a good 550W 80+ Bronze PSU for $60 or so and then watch EVGA's B-stock page for a refurbished GTX 970, they sell them for $250 with a one year warranty. Or an R9 380 4GB would also be a good choice if you don't want to buy refurbished. Or hell, wait to see if they have cheap GTX 970s at newegg/amazon/NCIX/etc for Thanksgiving/Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Last year you could get R9 290s dirt cheap for Black Friday, maybe you'll be able to get a 970 dirt cheap this year since they're not quite as good as the R9 390 and since prices have been falling on them. If you shop around you can sometimes find new GTX 970s and new R9 390s for $280 after a rebate, though go 650W or so if you want the 390. November had some unreal GPU sales last year. I remember seeing R9 280 for $135 after rebate and R9 290 for $200-$220 after rebate.
