Quick Question: What kind of wattage does my psu need/what is recommended to run 2 gigabyte gtx 960s and a fx8320 at 4GHz?

500-600.

 

960 sli is like a 980 in power consumption.

550 watts should be plenty. A 960 only uses around 120W under load.

500w, also don't build that if you do not have the parts. Tell me what you plan to do and what your budget is.

If you want to be pretty safe, go for 650W.

Yea because upgrading that cpu will increase power usage? WTF?

 

A 5820k uses the same power.

 

 

A 1500 W psu would be nice if sometime in the future you decided to grab 2 295x2 in an upgrade. ROFL

If you have 500W or more don't worry about it. You can try the second 960 in your current psu.

I'd feel safe with a good brand 650 watt. it's commonly accepted that a 500 watt is enough for most single GPU systems, and that GPU is a low 120 watt TDP, so if we round up to 115%, which is commonly the hard maximum of Nvidia gpus, that would add less than an additional 150 watts, so 650 should do nicely

650W is what I'd get - under load a 960 usually pulls 150-170W, 120W is just the TDP listed, nothing else. 2x170W +150W (FX, right?) = 490W - you're hitting the ceiling

Ihad 750w on SLi 970's no problem. That was one of the selling points for the maxwell.... low low power! Went 760w just to be safe recently but never had a problem with 10 watts lower running two cards. Before going Nvidia, my single r9 280X needed 750w just by itself!

750W is fine for 970 SLI and 390 CF as well - a 970 uses only about 80W less than a 390. It's not as big of a difference as marketing makes it out to be.

Min of 80W difference max of 110W difference (with 90-100W being the most common difference). 160-220 W difference in dual gpu is nothing to laugh at, but 750W easy plenty for 970 sli. 750W is NOT ENOUGH FOR 390 CF. We literally just had a guy a little bit back that was getting his 850W psu being tripped by max overpower with 2x390 and an overclocked 4790k (which is about 70-90W more than standard).

 

After getting a new 1k psu, he determined his peaking power use was closer to 900W.

 

On the topic though, I put forth that 500-600W should be fine, 500W more so with a intel cpu and 600W more with a AMD cpu, which is pretty similar to what you suggested.

Welp - Not sure where you got your numbers from but a R9 295x2 system (which uses about the same power as 390CF) pulls about 740W under absolute max load. Ask @Prysin
