Gaming CPU needed?

I want to upgrade my build in the coming months. Now, before you say "ae em dee sux entils beter", which I sorta agree with sometimes, hear me out.

 

I'm currently using an Oc'ed Fx 6300 (4.3ghz, if you don't mind me bragging [lol sorry, I'm just proud]), so, I already have a motherboard that supports the 83XX series. Would it be worth getting the i5, because I would have to get a whole new expensive mobo, and new liquid cooling (I want to do some heavy overclocking on that). With the 83XX, I'd just have to get the CPU.

 

If your answer is to stick with amd, should I go for 8350 or 8370?

that AMD lineup is dead, if you're want to upgrade, just go to Intel. it will beats AMD best Chip (9590) by a miles.

You'd need a better cooler with the 83XX to do OC's. Go Intel, sell your old stuff, or build another machine with it. Skylake isn't really worth it if you already have the RAM.

if its a gaming build, i5 ALL the way.

 

if its a numbercrunching build (any workload that uses all cores efficiently) the FX8350 will be the better pick.

i5. It'll be worth it for the future. Get a 6600K for upgradability.

TBH, not really. Haswell and its DDR3 is all that you really need outside a few very specific use case scenarios.

save up until you have enough money for an i5 + intel motherboard

 

buying a 8350 will just be a disappointment, the single core performance is practically the same as the CPU you have now, all it ads is 2 more cores, which will not give you any improvement in most games and programs

 

then when you find out how disappointing the 8350 is you will regret being $150 short now that you need to upgrade to intel because AMD has nothing better

Depends on how useful a z170 motherboard will be in the future, my viewpoint is skylake is not worth the extra cost, mostly just an opinion though

Since your on the AM3+ platform still, you might as well go with Skylake as s1151 isn't dead the way s1150/Haswell is.

if you look at the higher capacity prices, it starts to make sense.

From what I've found when OCing my friends 6300 It took a lot longer to crunch through IBT AVX when checking stability at about 13 seconds per pass compared to 9.5 seconds on mine. DDR4 will become mainstream when Zen drops in 2017 so it's your call really, to get the most out of the FX you'll need to clock it and most are too lazy to do it so going i5 will save you lots of time and hassle.

as much as people say FX is dead, haswell has also been replaced.

 

if you're doing it for "future proofing" (not that thats an actual thing.. more of a concept) i'd go for a 6600K, the total package of CPU+mobo+ram isnt mch more as a 4690K

(i know you have ram already, but for the $50 extra, you could as well just go for it)

FX is good if you need more cores for work and AAA games! If not get i5...
