is haswell slotted for any future upgrades, or is it actually dead?

Dead, but the 170 board will be replaced in a year which is why I went Haswell.

With probably a new chipset yes, but not a new socket.

Yes, I see zero chance of that.

A new chipset or a new socket? Either way Intel doesn't need to change the socket as Skylake doesn't use a FIVR unlike Haswell, and neither will the successive CPU until Intel manages to solve the issues of having a FIVR.

I don't see them changing the socket ether. Right now it offers no advantage in gaming to make switching from Haswell worth it. In a few years I bet that changes along with a new motherboard to match the new CPU. For all we know in two years AMD dominates.
