soo... yeah im more and more coming to the conclusion that its time to throw my 40 bucks mobo into the bin and upgrade.

so now the question is should i go with x99 or z170 as the 6700k and the 5820k are nearly the same price here.

seeing as im not just gonna game every now and again but also do some programming, emulating and virtualisation id really prefer those extra cores but i just wanted to hear the pros and contras of the plattforms from someone who knows it.

i didnt have much time to keep up and just wanted to ask around what the huge differences are and peoples opinions on it obviously.

"You know it'll clock down as soon as it hits 40°C, right?" - "Yeah ... but it doesnt hit 40°C ... ever  😄"

I'd go for x99. I'd love those extra cores/threads.

X99 is the way forward in this case if gaming isn't the main purpose of your rig. If you were gaming I'd be a little hesitant as you usually get more overclocking headroom from the consumer class chips rather than the enthusiast grade ones. You also get the ability to upgrade to Intel's next generation of CPUs (something that's not likely to happen for LGA 2011-3). But, for your scenario, definitely X99.

x99 will perform better in multithreaded tasks using over 8 threads

z170 will perform better in tasks that use 8 threads or less, and you have more upgrade options because there are still many CPUs to come out on that platform

x99 is not going to have any new CPUs, so when the next enthusiasts CPUs come out you wont be able to upgrade unless you also change your motherboard

seeing as i got a pretty slow upgrade cycle i think that`ll be ok

Have X99, still bought a Z170 setup. X99 is great but I like playing with the latest and greatest. If its just a gaming rig a 6600K is plenty

the x99 would be better for all kind of stuff (gaming/editing/programming/browsing/blablabla). the Z170 maybe newer but when it's about performance the x99 is just greater. from another side the x99 gots more extension (ram slots,pci-e,.......) and 6/8 cores abillity is quite cool either.

take a look at this it will show you the way  http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/x99-vs-z170-which-to-prefer.215569/
