HI my name is James,.

I am 19 and lanky!

I ahve also been so despite my big appetite. I just have a fast metabolism...

Now I am getting older I jsut want to gain some weight and muscle

I have a healthy lifestyle albeit quite a lot of snacking due to my fast metabolism.

The thin is I have a full time job (as a graphic design) and no time for going to the gym, I am active and do a fair bit of walking and bike riding,

How can a gain weight and muscle? without getting tubby or fat..

Should I get protein shakes? I know people will think I want something for nothing but I seriously don't have time for workout regimes with my work.. and I do plenty of walking and bike riding etc at weekends

Im no fitness geek so if people could explain in what to do and why would really appreciate it :)

Protein shakes, only work if you're actually working out. And they don't really even do all that much more thaa a healthy diet does.

If you want to bulk up, you need to work out.

Eating giant mounds of steak and protein shakes will help but you need to do weight lifting to bulk up properly.

Based on your current exercise you won't 'get swoll' because Walking and bike aren't activities that benefit from having large muscles. Those kinds of activities benefit from <insert muscle terms I can't remember>. As a result if you wanted to get big you'd have to find time to go to the gym and do the kinds of workouts that 'get you swoll'

Edit: I 'Lean' is the word I'm looking for maybe?

do as many pushups as you can in a set, then multiply that by 10 and do the total in a day.

also different types of pushups can help dramatically ex) I've been doing these

 Smith_082405-3.jpg FYI not me ( http://www.military.com/military-fitness/workouts/try-pushup-push-workout )

they really help, it hurts like hell in the morning

Protein

Lots of Chinese food! (my cousing uses this strategy before every college basketball season to gain a few pounds then turn it into muscle)

Work out, so at least being skinny doesnt mean scrawny, turn some of it into muscle :)

Hi James.

No matter what, you need to eat healthy. Eating sugars and fatty stuff will result in you becoming fat when you hit 22 or whatever and feel crappy.

Unfortunately, the only way to healthily bulk up (from muscle) is by doing things to build muscle. I would pick up a weight set ($20) and start doing a workout routine that is designed for "on the go" or "at home". bodybuilding.com im sure has some. There are hotel room workouts, for example. You can do many muscle groups with just a set of dumbbells.

Then, drink lots of protein, eat lots opf protein. Lots of chicken. Get your extra calories from protein, veggies, etc. Probably throw SOME carbs in there as well.

No, they're rubbish. You already get way more protein through your normal diet than what you can turn into muscle.

^^ Your best way to go around it when first starting out....

You probably won't be making any serious gains to start out with, as you're likely not going to be in a full bodybuilding routine, but should be all you need to add some amount of mass and build to your frame.

I went from 150 pounds to 190 pounds and all brute strength, but i look mildly different (don't look my weight)

Exercise and tonnes of calories... drink water/milk no fizzy stuff.

Not sure really what you mean, gain weight or gain muscle? i gained muscle but not mass.... i guess it depends on how you work out.

Protein shakes should ALWAYS be used to SUPPLEMENT a diet, not replace one. If you're getting adequate protein through your diet, then there's really no need, but when you're struggling to reach your daily intake through food sources, then they're a convenient solution.

BTW my workouts were all using my own body weight...

Push ups, sit ups, holding my legs out straight raising them vertical in the air and lowering them not touching the floor, great for core muscles.

I also benched my bed with stuff on it, no idea of the weight but i did sets of 3 for like 30 reps, and add weight when my body had rested and repaired.

The biggest thing is rest periods, don't work out every day, it does nothing but break your body down, you need to attack your body to cause mutation (muscle repairs and gains more strength, until it can no longer be repaired in the same space adding strength and will then grow)

I also did running with a bag on my back with like 40KG weight over a few miles, this is great for overall strength and cardio.

There is a difference between useful muscle and useless muscle, most body builders will just grow useless muscle.

When you're this guy:

;)

I get the whole "useless muscle" argument.

But he actually just looks good, and scary. Not all weird and oddly deformed (like many bodybuilders do).

Speaking of.... off to the gym!

It's different for everyone really... I neither like the whole, my quads are bigger than your entire body, kinda look most un-natural guys have, but clearly they like it.... In which case, good for them.
