AMD 860K with 780ti?

Gdourado

Hello, how are you?

A friend of mine has a gigabyte a88x g1 with an 860k and 8gb of 2400 ram.

Now he wants to get a used 780ti.

He games at 1080p.

Will the 860k be a bottleneck on the 780ti?

He plays mostly shooters and third person games.

Cheers!

 go for it a 860k could possibley handle a 290 maybe a 290x idk

No, anything beyond R9 380 is too much for that CPU.

If your friends gets the 780Ti (if it's super cheap for example) tell him to start gathering money for a new CPU. I used a GTX 970 with an Athlon X4 750k @4,5gHz (which is like 5% less powerful than the 860k so practically the same considering my OC) for a month or so, got some pretty heavy bottlenecks in CPU demanding games. Having that CPU does not justify getting a worse GPU if you can afford a better one, you can always upgrade the CPU in the near future.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT 16GB GDDR6 Motherboard: MSI PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

Of course, but I wanted to let you know from someone with a first-hand experience how it really is so you know too from now on :D

Just grab a GTX 760, you won't be powering much over that with that CPU.

I would expect a significant reduction in GPU usage when playing demanding games - now that isn't say it still wouldn't be an improvement over their old system (but you didn't what that was) but the system will be bottlenecked.

The old GPU is a 270x.

There is no better on fm2+.

Would a 8350 am3+ be much better?

It would be better and it shouldn't bottleneck too much, not noticeably in most games for sure, however tell him to get the i5-4460 and he's good for gaming, getting the 8350 in this case is not a good idea unless he's on a budget and needs a powerful streaming/rendering/video editing etc CPU, these are tasks that the 8350 will outperform any i3 and lower i5's like 4460

Yes & no.

A locked i5 would be a much more agreeable upgrade, it can handle any modern GPU.

just wait until pascal is released, then Nvidia will nerf it with drivers once more, so by then it will be worse then a R9 370

What do you mean by that?

Yeah in any demanding games the 860K will definitely bottleneck the 780 Ti at 1080P. If the 780 Ti is cheap it's still worth doing, as you can always upgrade the CPU and whatnot later... and it will probably still perform much better than what he already has.
