Both within ~5% of each other, 390 usually edging it out tho.

970 would be cheaper in the long run and potentially upfront due to less power used, and it needing a cheaper PSU.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

The 390 performs all around better.

The 390 has more than double the usable vram, meaning you NEVER need to worry about it again.

The 970 has lower power consumption.

Card temps mean nothing, that is dependent largely on cooler.

Quietness/Loudness mean nothing, that is dependent on cooler.

Shadow play, and nvidia features 90% of the time mean nothing, there are free alternatives that work just about as well.

Over all, the 390 is a better card.

Well 970s can be overclocked to 1500mhz easily. So its really up to price and the vendor really.

If a 390 is cheaper get it.IF a 970 is cheaper get it

You could overclock the 970, as it overclocks better than the 390, and get better performance.

Neh it doesn't work that way. More Mhz doesn't necessarily mean more performance...

At what point does it stop being true?

Does a reference 970 not run louder and hotter than a sapphire model?

Are there not alternatives like FreeSync, OBS, or other recording softwares or general programs that make up for not having shadowplay or g-sync? Albeit, there are no real great alternatives to cuda acceleration, but in this case, i don't think its warranted.

It DOES work that way. Overclocking does give you better performance ( check images )

i cant talk for coolers, i have no experience there.

the freesync - gsync thing isnt an "alternative" more so a "pick the monitor that goes with your card"

(that said, wendell something something, spoof embedded displayport, something something mobile gsync something something freesync display)

OBS and shadowplay are deeply different implementations, and even within the world of streaming software, theres people that swear loyal to both the OBS and Xsplit side.

theres some other things as well, but we're going deeply into "personal preference" terretory.

Until you reach an unstable overclock where the higher you go, the more the performance degrades. Also,

970 - 1442mhz core

390 - 1200mhz core

Yet 390 comes out atop in most of the benchmarks.

If you're at 1080p, both will do you just fine, and vram won't be a problem on the 970. As everyone else has said, get whichever is cheaper. Even though the 390 is slightly quicker than the 970, if you can shave some money off there and spend it somewhere else, it may be worth it. Slightly bigger ssd or a new game or something.... Speaking of which, there are often deals (not sure if there's one on now) that nvidia has that bundle a game with a new geforce gtx card. Eg I got a free copy of the witcher 3. That was a few months back. Just a thought.

i'd say 390 just cause its beats 970 barely in many tests but the main thing is its 8gb vram vs 3.5 and 0.5 of slow retard dumb dumb vram.

390 because it usually does better than a 970 and as it stands has no sever problems with dx12 unlike maxwell.

intel and r390 isnt as suitable as amd and r390 ?

wouldnt as graphics driver update. the r9 390 will eventually beat the 970 ?

since is newer and more " future proof "

Its actually based on much older tech. It's a refresh of the R9 290, just overclocked, better manufacturing, and far better memory.

If DX12 continues down the path DX12 is taking, then AMD will have a higher gain in performance, than the gain that Nvidia will see. Don't mistake me, both companies will benefit, just AMD will benefit more thanks to their vastly superior support of A-sync processing.

No, intel cpu + amd gpu isn't worse than amd cpu + amd gpu. 99% of the time, the faster cpu is better with everything, vendor aside. Intel just happens to make the faster cpu.

The 390 is marginally more "future proof" because its marginally faster all around, and has enough vram to let you never have to worry about it for as long as that card's kicking.

I'd say 390 as you can get into stuttering issues with the 970's and 3.5+ textures, esp running higher res's. I went from 2x GB 970 SLI to a single MSI 390 and though my single doesn't do better then SLI, its smoother and 'nicer' overall. Even single card 1vs1 the 390 is better then the 970s I've had all around...

The stuttering only happens when you get over 3.5gbs of memory usage, if the game even can be counted as running during that time.

The stuttering you were most likely having was due to sli, not the 970 itself.

390 still a better card though all around :3

No the stuttering happened with single 970s as well, just not as much... I'm happy to have switched to the 390 even though I've been green for years...
