970

a 390 if your gonna be playing 1440p-4k

R9 390 is better than all of those, 780, 780Ti and 970.

390>970>780

970.

But give the 390 a shot.

why do people buy 970 instead of 390 ?

and the 780 6G isnt it better than just 970 4G ?

isnt higher  G better ?

No... Peeps don't buy the 970 over the 390. Other then a few cases.

And the G is just Msi's way of saying how much vram it has. Right now the 390 is the better card.

The VRAM quantity in GB is just one aspect of performance. The 970 uses a new architecture (Maxwell) and Nvidia is more committed to driver optimizations for this architecture as they are still manufacturing and selling it.

why do people buy 970 instead of 390 ?

Well before the 390 came out AMD's previous card in this segment was the 290 which was slightly slower than the 970 at stock speeds. So we used to recommend the 970.

Now the 390 is a bit quicker and it seems to be selling well. Some people will still buy the 970 because Geforce has very strong marketing and brand name.

Video RAM is just a capacity, it only affects performance if you don't have enough. And 4 GB is plenty, even up to 4K.

best to buy the 970 right ? in most case scenario the 970 > 780 6GB

Yes, I would take a GTX 970 over a GTX 780 for sure.

That said, at 1080p the R9 390 is either a bit slower or a bit faster depending on the game you're playing. But that's not because of the raw amount of memory. Things like cooling, power usage, and overclocking potential may be deciding factors.

As usual, data is fundamental! :D

This is probably not going to be a popular answer around here, but based on the benchmarks I've seen I think it's close enough that I'd probably take the GTX 970 and overclock the snot out of it.

That said, I don't think the R9 390 is a terrible choice. Out of the box, it's probably the faster card more often than not.

Nvidia has better software (e.g. Shadowplay is better than AMD alternative), some people just prefer one brand over the other for whatever reason, in some places the Nvidia card is better priced (where I live GTX 970 is cheaper than R9 390), the Nvidia card uses less power (and produces less heat) which is important to some people esp if they have mediocre power supply.

There are some valid reasons to get the GTX 970, just depends if you only care about FPS or want other features/benefits.

Also more VRAM is good... if you need it. Unless you're playing at ~3440x1440 or 4K you really shouldn't need the 6GB over the 3.5-4GB. 3-4GB is enough for 1080P and 1440P gaming. Though if you're gonna play at above 1440P, a single GTX 780 or 970 isn't really gonna provide great performance anyways.

will the r9 390 come out on top since is newer. and eventually they will have better amd drivers to be better than 970 ?

nvidia has better software ? i usually just install the driver. is there a good software ?

Nvidia has a few more features in the Nvidia control panel that I like (for example # of pre-rendered frames), and Shadowplay is better than the AMD equivalent... that's about it. If you don't care about that and just want to play the games then go with the R9 390 since it will perform better.

does ati always beat nvidia at the same price range as nvidia in previous generation ? nvidia 700 series and 600 series ? same price point against each other . like r9 390 price = nvidia 970 , but r9 390 performance > nvidia 970

previous generations ?

380 is 10-15% faster than the 960 for the same price

950 is the same as the 270X

Fury beats the crap out of the 980

390X is 100$ cheaper than the 980 and gets 5 fps less only

Older cards

280X was faster than the 770 (both rebrands)

280 was faster than the 760

290 and 290X I'm no 100% sure - I think with some drivers the 290X matched the 780 Ti and Titan

265 and 270 took a dump on the 750 Ti

7970 GHz was faster than a 680

7950 GHz was the same as a 670

7870 was better than the 660 (ti?)

can't remember most of the older stuff

prior to the 500 series, Nvidia were crappy mostly - the 8000 series were good but the 9000, 200 and 400 were crap.

If there's any rule, it's that when Nvidia introduces brand new cards, they usually seem like a fantastic deal. But things get very muddy when AMD starts responding with their own new products. But no, you can't apply a rule like "AMD is always better at the same price." For example, I don't think the R9 370 is as good as the GTX 950, and the Fury X is slower than the 980 Ti in most games.

Competition was pretty aggressive during the 600/700/HD 7000 days, probably because there was so little new silicon for so long. Between the GTX 680 and HD 7970, the recommended best value card swapped sides several times as AMD's drivers improved, prices fluctuated, and both cards were eventually rebranded as the 770 and R9 280X. It just depended on when you bought, and what benchmarks you were seeing.

280X was faster than the 770 (both rebrands)

The GTX 770 was usually a hair faster, though as usual it depends on the game and settings. Often they're within a fraction of a frame per second of each other.

Yeah, crazy thing was that at the time the GTX 680 launched, it put the 7970 to shame across the board: price, performance, power, heat, etc. AMD got a lot of mileage out of driver improvements, and then there was the 7970 GHz Edition. The GTX 770 was released (with a TDP approaching the 7970, I might add) because the 680 was clearly beaten by that point.
