Yeah, crazy thing was that at the time the GTX 680 launched, it was faster than the 7970. AMD got a lot of mileage out of driver improvements, and then there was the 7970 GHz Edition. The GTX 770 was released (with a TDP approaching the 7970, I might add) because the 680 was clearly beaten by that point.

in most r9 390 is faster than gtx 970 ? because people was saying gtx 970 was best value. price vs performance. but in the end r9 390 is faster than 970 ? and cheaper ?

does ati always beat nvidia at the same price range as nvidia in previous generation ? nvidia 700 series and 600 series ? same price point against each other . like r9 390 price = nvidia 970 , but r9 390 performance > nvidia 970

Usually yes, but there are some areas where Nvidia is doing really well. The GTX 950 is performing really well for the price, the GTX 980 Ti is outperforming the Fury X. The R9 200 series was across the board better priced than the GTX 700 cards. And then before that was a bit weird... the HD 7000 series released way before the GTX 600 series and at first was competing with the GTX 500 series (which it destroyed), then the GTX 600 series came out and performed better, and then the HD 7000 series got some price cuts and drivers boosted performance and it then pulled ahead of the 600 series in value.

But now after the 390 launched, the game has changed. So now the card with the better value is the 390, as of today.
