290x + mx4?

xnoobftw

Hey LTT members! I've got a question to ask!

I've replaced the thermal paste on my 290x like a month or smth ago

post-121155-0-98156400-1439517558.jpg

and the load temps i am getting now is like 85-89c (fml) and yes i have checked that i have seated the cooler properly. (heck people are telling me this is wayyy too much thermal paste)

The initial load temps right after i've replaced it that time was ard 80c~

Now I've once again changed the thermal paste to a new set of mx4 with slightly more thermal paste and the load temps is maxing out at 76c

What is going on?

The BBQ: i7-4770 / 212x / Tri-X R9 290x 1075/1400 / MSI H87-G43 GAMING / EVGA G2 850W / Corsair Spec 03 / Samsung 840 EVO 250gb SSD / Toshiba 2TB HDD / 8gb Kingston DDR3 1600mhz

You got bad mounting pressure when you first installed and it didn't spread properly? I use far less for a gtx 970.

big dot, plop on top.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

tbh I would still have used the pea method but just used proportionalely more peas

But the grain method should have better coverage due to the die's shape...

Sure you putted everything back on correctly?

Yeap! I screwed the 4 screws in a star pattern first before screwing others in!

You got bad mounting pressure when you first installed and it didn't spread properly? I use far less for a gtx 970.

When i took the GPU out from the cooler i could see how little the previous thermal paste was on the actual die tho....(the amount is in the pic)

It might be from how well the paste was applied and the lack of air pockets.

Hmmm maybe!

big dot, plop on top.

huh?

Seems like it's too much to me.

But the more i put the better the temps D:

instead of a line, next time just put a big ass blob on top and then plop the heatsink on top. clean excess goo with q-tip or paper towel.

Bit off topic, but are you drunk? No offense, just seriously curious.

And OP, the 290X has a max temperature of 95C. AMD even allows it.

Well if I do recall he said he was drunk or something earlier. Plus he's been more active on the forum in the past 30 minutes than like half the people on here lol.

Nope!

that would help with the temps...

but the GPU die does need a lot more than a CPU usually does

I usually spread them very thinly and then drop a pea size in the middle.

You need to cover the whole die imo.

Wait so you spread them and then put a pea in the center?

Sadly i cant get my hands on any thermal pads D:

Pretty much, yes.

How's your load temps for 290x then? Since our ambient is pretty much the same (plus the haze from indon is really screwing me up xD)

29c ambient.

71-72 at stock.

75-76 @1111/1350

80-82 @1170/1450

Mind you my TwinFrozr4 cooler is not that good compare to the new TwinFrozr5.

The haze caused ambient temp dropped to 24c at night.. i can OC my card to 1200mhz because of it. xD
