Alright so me and a friend were putting together a system and discussing possible parts so we were wanting to use a fury card but when it came to choosing a cpu he said FX 8350 I said that would bottleneck the fury so I suggested an i5 4690/6600.

So I want your opinion would the 8350 bottle neck the system?

Why invest in a 3 year old platform anyways?  If you want a AMD based system get one based on the A88X chipset.

 

Edit: of the two you suggested though, I'd get a Z170 based system.

Why invest in a 3 year old platform anyways? If you want a AMD based system get one based on the A88X chipset.

Edit: of the two you suggested though, I'd get a Z170 based system.

Oh god would it ever bottleneck the fury. Definitely go with Intel.

FX is fine for certain usage cases. It can game, but not all games play well, when chasing certain user-requirements, it can fail to meet expectations.

Intel CPU's just take the guesswork out of the equation.

I do think it would do a better job than the 8350 (and its traditionally cheaper and certainly uses less power)

 

The A88X platform will also support the A10-8xxx APUs, which is rumored to be a 6 core part.  Not to include native USB3 support, more SATA connections, PCIE 3.0, and faster RAM support.

Just show him benchmarks of i5 4690k/6600k vs 8350. Getting fury with 8350 is a waste of money, it's like buying a supercar for city. If your friend doesn't agree to buy i5 eventually and wants fx, then pair the faildozer with R9 280/380 GTX 970/770.

i3 is cheaper than 8350 and locked i5 with cheap MB is equal or within 15€ margin that's well worth it.

Any cpu/apu from AMD would bottle any higher end gpu. I would go with the skylake cpu

Yep, went from a 2600K to this 4690 (non-K) (2600K died, needed instant replacement) and every task I do but one improved (due to IPC), and with me using GPU-assist encoding, its not that much slower either to encode video on 4 threads vs 4+4.

/Plus, new mobo feature set :)

Also the Fury X at 1080P does have kinda low FPS compared to 980Ti so hard to say for sure...

Carrizo is all about IPC.

 

Bulldozer - all about parallelism.

Piledriver - all about IPC.

Steamroller - all about power savings and clock speed.

Excavator - all about IPC and power savings.

 

That's pretty much how the AMD roadmap is laid out.  The 2 extra cores are going to help in games like GTAV that use 4 cores, so you can have 2 cores to handle system needs.  I have a A10-7850k and pretty much the only game that it has a hard time with is WoW (which I haven't played on this exact chip, but I got a good feeling its still going to suck ass) and GTAV (although I do get about 45fps anyways, I'd just like to see a little more).  Adding more cores wont help WoW at all, but I really do feel like it will help GTAV.

More than bottlenecking, it's a dead platform, it's very old, if you were comparing to sandy bridge then it has value, but 5 years have passed and, it still offers PCIe 2.0 while the industry may be moving to 4.0, performance per core is disapointing and no game will use 8 cores, so not only it's outdated, but for gaming it's pretty much a waste of money. And the little fact that the i5 will beat it in every game. The Fury is a high end card, i always say make the system balanced, and the 8350 by any standard, it's not a mid-high end CPU, not anymore if it ever was, it's a budget option. Even a locked i5 would perform better and give you better features.

The 2 extra cores are going to help in games like GTAV that use 4 cores, so you can have 2 cores to handle system needs.  I have a A10-7850k and pretty much the only game that it has a hard time with is WoW (which I haven't played on this exact chip, but I got a good feeling its still going to suck ass) and GTAV (although I do get about 45fps anyways, I'd just like to see a little more).  Adding more cores wont help WoW at all, but I really do feel like it will help GTAV.

Two extra cores is nothing that major, but it may provide an extra 5-10 FPS.

It will provide a smoother frame rate.  You wont have as many dips from 45 down to 35 and so on.

 

Excavator has already been proven to have about a 10% ICP increase as compared to Steamroller in the moble sector, where it has already been launched.

Carrizo is all about IPC.

 

Bulldozer - all about parallelism.

Piledriver - all about IPC.

Steamroller - all about power savings and clock speed.

Excavator - all about IPC and power savings.

Steamroller has a 15-20% better IPC over Piledriver... :P (sadly no 6-core or 8-core version was made for AM3+...)

So I want your opinion would the 8350 bottle neck the system?

 

That depends entirely on the game, what framerate you're expecting, and what resolution and settings you're using.

 

Sometimes, yes, it will. However it's likely that in many cases your framerate cap will be the first performance limit before the CPU, at least in games less demanding of the CPU.
