Questions about high refresh rate monitors

Hieb

Hi,

In the next month or two I'm looking to upgrade my monitor... and I'm curious if high refresh rate monitors (144Hz) have an option to run at something like 75Hz or 90Hz... I'm asking because most people I've talked to say that playing at 144Hz RUINED 60Hz for them, and I know on a lot of my games it will be impossible to maintain anywhere close to 144Hz because they're too CPU bound... but rather than bouncing between playing at a smooth ~144 fps and 60-100 fps (which I imagine would be kinda stuttering since it's not even), I was wondering if I can just set the monitor to refresh at like 75 or 90 because I'm confident I can maintain that in most of my games.

Secondly, does watching YouTube videos look bad on monitors with refresh rates that aren't a multiple of 60Hz... like on a 75Hz refresh rate, does watching 30 FPS or 60 FPS video produce noticeable stuttering?

If you have AMD then just use FRTC to set the fps cap to 90 and you're done

Probably would look for something like a g-sync monitor then if your frame rate is going to fluctuate a lot, however they are quite a lot more. Also what games are you going to be playing?

Welp. No idea then ^_^ - I guess use Riva Tuner?

No way in hell am I getting a GSync monitor lol... cheapest one is $650 for a 1080P G-Sync monitor... no thanks. I can get a 1440P 144Hz freesync monitor for less than that (and I plan to even though I wont be able to use FreeSync).

In regards to your second question about watching Youtube videos on refresh rates that aren't multiples of 60, if you think about it, 144Hz isn't a multiple of 30, 60, 90, or 120. No problems watching videos on the display. Also, you don't need to adjust the refresh rate of the monitor. You can limit the frame rate using Precision from EVGA. Some games also feature frame rate limiters.

You can use the nvidia control panel and set up a custom refresh rate, no idea if it works, it works with overclocking your monitor not sure if it works with underclocking. EDIT: forget that it's a convoluted method of something that can be done within games like @Godlygamer23 said.

Cant live without Shadowplay :P I was seriously considering getting an R9 Fury but the best recording option is OBS which requires some jumping through hoops... not nearly as elegant a solution as Shadowplay unfortunately :(

Yes, you can set your monitor refresh rate in Windows. You can also limit frames in things like MSI Afterburner (RivaTuner). 144Hz hasn't ruined 60fps gaming for me because I honestly only reach 144Hz in not even a handful of games (CS:GO may be the only one honestly).

If you aren't interested in 144Hz I'd honestly spend money on a nice IPS higher resolution monitor.

And to answer your other question: 144Hz has has no effect on TouTube videos. They're just like they were before my 144Hz monitors.

Raptr? I know it's not as good as shadwoplay in the eyes of many but it works fine for me - doesn't really tank performance - was constantly on for 2 months before I noticed it

I thought you were going to be gaming on the 760 that's the only reason I suggested it, 980ti could probably run most games 1080p 144hz if you lower the settings or you're not playing the witcher 3s and crysis 3s of the world.

Yes but without FreeSync/G-Sync the monitor is still going to go through 60/75/90/120/144 (depending on the refresh rate) refresh cycles per second... so if I watch a 60 FPS video on, let's say, a 75Hz monitor, 25% of the frames of the video would be lasting for two refresh cycles instead of 1.

Hang on I'll set my monitor to 1280x720 75Hz mode and test with a YT video or Twitch stream... will report back in a bit :P

I rely on the record desktop functionality, from what I heard Raptr only works with a supported games list (though I presume it is quite large)

All I know is I had 100GB of HDD space that "vanished" over the course of my first 2 months using the PC xD - Raptr was on a recording rampage.

I'm mostly gonna be playing Smite (150 FPS no problem), GTA V (my 4690K struggles to drive above ~90-100 FPS, so a stable 120-144 FPS isnt gonna happen), Battlefield 4 (this can do 120-144 FPS no problem), Wildstar (MMO, so in dungeons lucky to get 60-80 fps).

Basically GTA V and Wildstar I know I'm never gonna really make use of the 144Hz refresh rate because they're really CPU intensive and have a lot more framerate dips than BF4 or Smite

Wouldn't that be kinda stuttery, like playing at 40-50 FPS on a 60Hz panel is stuttery. Basically I'm wondering if there's an option on 144Hz monitors for the monitor to refresh at a lower rate than that... such as 75 or 90Hz. I'm looking into these three monitors (the Acer being particularly appealing since it's $200 cheaper...):

If V-Sync is enabled, then yes it could have some stuttering(if for example, you go from 60 to 45). However, I play with Adaptive V-Sync when gaming(usually) and it turns V-Sync on and off depending on your frame rate.
