Questions about high refresh rate monitors

Hieb

The Acer xb270hu is not 1000$

And a FreeSync Display with a NVidia Card would be stupid.

is a plain old 144Hz monitor stupid? That's basically what the FreeSync monitor is to me. It's a 2560x1440 monitor with a 144Hz refresh rate. 144Hz 1440P monitors don't come WITHOUT either FreeSync or G-Sync... but seeing as the FreeSync one is $400 cheaper it's damn sure a better investment in my eyes.

And yes in Canada the Acer XG270HU is $616 after tax, while the XB270HU is $1063 after tax. The ROG Swift from Asus is $995 after tax.

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W

You cannot use FreeSync with an NVIDIA card.

If V-Sync is enabled, then yes it could have some stuttering(if for example, you go from 60 to 45). However, I play with Adaptive V-Sync when gaming(usually) and it turns V-Sync on and off depending on your frame rate.

I play without VSync and 40-50 FPS is pretty stuttery on my 60Hz screen because it means 10-20 frames lasting for twice as long as the other frames... hopefully with a higher refresh rate monitor it's not as big a deal since the refresh cycles are faster so lasting for two frames isn't nearly as big a deal.

I'm aware. That's why I said I'm basically looking at it like it's just a plain old 144Hz monitor with 1440P. I'm not going to be making use of FreeSync but I'm not going to be spending the extra $400 for G-Sync because variable refresh rate tech isn't THAT valuable to me.

I cannot speak personally for its value as I've never experienced it before, but for people that have used it, they definitely support it.

You'll still get some stutter without V-Sync. Also, are you sure you're playing without V-Sync? The drivers now have the ability to control V-Sync.

V-sync is broken AF - especially in games like CS:GO. Drivers break it even more

Yeah I always disable it and let the framerate fly... makes mouse input feel a bit more responsive :)

I'm sure it's great technology and I'd love to take advantage of it (main reason I was considering getting an R9 Fury instead of a 980 Ti)... but the adaptive sync on its own just isn't worth $400 to me. Basically I was debating between getting a 2560x1440 60Hz monitor (~$450) or a 1920x1080 144Hz monitor (~$300-350)... then decided what the hell I'll get a 1440P 144hz monitor :P

Really I'd love to get that Acer Predator 3440x1440 75Hz IPS monitor... but it's like $1400 after tax which is way too steep for me for just a monitor :/

So I tested with my Dell monitor @ 1280x720 75Hz and 60 FPS video playback seemed fine in spite of it not going evenly into the 75Hz refresh rate... makes me a lot more optimistic about getting a high refresh rate monitor :D

How is it broken?

V-sync on = random parts of frames in the form of bars flash while a map is loading or at random moments ingame - happens 5-6 times each game for me. No V-sync = no bars. Witcher 3, Valley, Age of Wonders and other game are fine.

Interesting. If I ever get into CSGO, I'll try to remember that. Though by the time I get into it, it might be fixed.

Not sure if the game or my card - I honestly am too much of a paranoid individual to tell. I mean - I ran OCCT and even though the monitor was in power saving mode the test didn't stop and I got 0 errors for 30 or so mins. I also never see artifacts in Valley. I've heard people say they had artifacts in CS GO today then none tomorrow. No idea - I'm @ stock

Anyway - not to take over the thread.
