Whats the best am2 cpu?

Hi, i need to know what the best socket am2 CPU is, i thought the phenom 965 was am2 but apparently it isn't...

Also what is the best gpu for it? :)

I'm pretty sure the Phenom II 965 BE is the best AM2 CPU.  Because the 6 cores were all AM2+.

I dont know if amazon is correct but it says its am3 and my mobo doesnt support am3

Phemon II is AM2+. If that's fine then the best is Phenom II 980 BE. The best plain AM2 is Phenom X4 9950 BE.

The best is probably an Athlon 64 FX or an Opteron 1356. Supposedly AM2+ chips are supported by socket AM2, but only at Hypertransport 2.0.

Probably not even close. :D

 

Hope you don't mind me asking, have you even taken a look at the CPU support list of your motherboard? The fact that it has AM2 socket does not mean it supports every AM2 processor ever made.

Depends if your board has an AM2+ bios update, as then you can use an AM3 CPU at HT2.0 (I believe) speeds (not a big difference).

 

Phenom II X4 945s are cheap. And 956s can be.

No, because I have a pre-built hp compaq dc5850 so i dont know what its mobo is......

nerp, my phenom II x4 920 is AM2+ and even though my socket is am2+ is also supports am3 CPU's, it REALLY depends on your motherboard for what is the best one on that socket.

My issue is though, i dont know if my mobo (ms 7500) supports am3 outherwise i would get the phenom 965! :/
