390 VS 970

as the Title say, which one is better and why ?

970 for 1080p and has low temps

390 has higher temps and 1440p or 4k ready

390 - more than double the VRAM, slightly faster out of the box and allows for 1440p as well.
Only about 35W more power draw.
Supports A-sync compute.

390 all the way. It can go either way at 1080p. but for 1440p and above the 390 is better in every way. I have the 390, and I can max out any game I like at 1080p and maintain a consistent 60fps, sometimes higher with VSync disabled. The temps and power consumption are slightly higher, yes, but IMO it's worth it for one of the best bang-for-buck cards on sale today

R9 390 because it's better in 4k and 1440p plus sometimes even beats the 970 at 1080p.

i dont see the issue with 970 and high resolutions...

that has been entirely filled up with chrome & multiple games before, didnt even get to 70% VRAM usage...

i've heard worse.

 

theres a 3rd party client for second life that on max settings will fill up a titan X with ease.

R9 390 if it's cheaper

970 if you can get a good model that will let you OC for a bit less than a 390

Really, they're both so close in 1080 and 1440 that unless you plan on running 4k, it's personal preference.  I wouldn't see the point in trying to run 4k with a single 390, though.

The only real advantage of the 970 is power consumption. There are a few games the 970 outperforms the 390 at 1080p, but mostly the 390 is the better GPU even at 1080p (and it's clearly better at 1440p or above).

From the reviews I've seen, it's only better by a few fps....nothing that would make me think ill of buying either one.  /shrug

I vote the 390 cause its good now and will be even better tomorrow(DX12) it seems...

390 is better. More Vram and has async compute so it's better in DX12 and VR. Performance is about the same with the 970 being slightly better at 1080 and 390 better at higher resolutions.
