i7 930... Is it time to upgrade to Skylake?

Hey guys,
So 5 or 6 years ago I built an i7 930 rig. Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Mobo, 12GB DDR3, GTX 550Ti, with the CPU OC'd to 3.5 Ghz. I added a Samsung EVO840 SSD later down the track. 

I don't do a lot of new title gaming, but I do a lot of audio production with ProTools. As My sessions get larger and larger my CPU starts to struggle and I get playback errors as the 930 bottlenecks. 

So it's time to have a big upgrade again and I'm thinking I'll go down the Skylake path. i7-6700k CPU, Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Mobo, 16GB DDR4, Samsung 850 Pro SSD and a Nepton 240M Liquid Cooler.

What do you guys think? Is this a smart move?  I've been recommended to an 5820k/x99 platform as a possible alternative. Any other recommendations? Cheers!

Hahaha! I don't game anywhere near as much as I used to, so the GPU doesn't matter all that much to me... but if it makes you feel any better, I'm getting an old Radeon R9 270X this week from a friend. 

 

But what are your thoughts on my platform dilema?

You could go z97 4790k and keep your ram - cheaper option

Looks good however X99 boards are getting cheaper and cheaper now and the 5820k is only a bit more expensive than a 6700k but the motherboard will also be more expenisve but you will gain 2 more cores which could be very useful in your case.

 

In my country it would cost about 70/100 bucks more to get a X99 based platform and in my opinion that is a worthy upgrade for the money.

For gaming? No.

But since you work with PT I would.

Get a 5820K with the cheapest motherboard you can get. Price difference isn't too wide when both skylake and haswell-e both runs on DDR4 Skylake can use DDR3 too, price difference is like $20 dollars.
