well, i'm not into reddit a whole lot, but i can imagine most of the people there wouldnt be the right people.

the only way to have a non-toxic linux community is to have ZERO idealism.

Well unfortunately the problem with Linux fan base is that the few bad apples are the most vocal and hipster-esque ones.

GHAnome? Why say it like that? The g is silent...as in /nəʊm/, or maybe even /noʊm/. I mean, unless that's how the French say it, but even then I'd think its not so apparent

Oh, I see. The same kind of people exist even for Windows and Mac, and for many other things.

Ubuntu Forums is amazing. They are a kind community, so it shocks me to hear about people's tales of Linux users who act like that.

well... i'd say the bad apples in most communities are the most vocal ones.

when was the last time we saw feminist movements talk about equality, rather than the superiority of women?

Phonetically I have only ever known it as /nəʊm/ or /noʊm/, never /gnoʊm/. I know that in French, I think if I remember correctly, the consonant is pronounced but origins of the word does have a pronounced consonant. I never bothered to look up Linux's usage of it, to be honest, so it could be how they specifically pronounce it but if it is the same as "garden gnome", you do not say "GAH-NO-MUH". It is pronounced kind of like Noam Chomsky (aka "just say gnome!"). In fact, if you trace the word's origins to (Renaissance)Latin, it is derived from gnomus but still the 'g' is not pronounced. How and why is that in Latin /g/ assimilates to a velar nasal [ŋ] before /n/.

So you don't say GAHnome, you just say (g)nome. And I have never heard anyone say "GAHnome". :o

Well, part of the reason for the odd pronunciation is due to the fact that GNOME is actually an acronym. GNU Network Object Environment. It draws the hard "G" sound from GNU, which is officially pronounced /ɡnuː/. Another reason for its pronunciation is because that's how the two original developers said it is to be pronounced. However, /ˈnoʊm/ is a more than accepted pronunciation (although, some like myself will look at you funny at first while our brains decide to remember that we're talking about the same thing). It's mostly all in how you were taught at this point :P

Ah! So it was specifically in relation to Linux. I should have googled immediately after watching the video to make sure there wasn't specific way in which they say it, but I had been busy writing something and only had time to comment how odd it was they would pronounce the [g].

In that case, nevermind my silliness then! I know a few things in Linguistics and now I tend to analyse things annoyingly. Though I prefer to say /noʊm/, it is good to know something new!
