Tourism Australia has set up ‘Giga platforms’ placed in stunning spots. If you’ve got the associated app, you can then hop onto them and capture a snap taken by a far off camera, that grabs high resolution, expansive shots. From there, you can zoom in to your heart’s content, going from the macro-wonder to the micro joy of your own grinning face.

It look amazing .. maybe other countries will follow the idea..

What's the point? Selfies are supposed to.. show off yourself right? Hence why they have 'self' in the name.

Isn't this like super privacy invasive? I mean all those other people in the shot don't really have choice to be in it. And you new have a super high res image of them on your phone..... Seems creepy.

Is it really a selfie if youre not the one taking it?

Dont think so

The cringiest part is they still have their phone in their hand, no doubt with the camera open ready to take a selfie every fucking second.

It's mostly for the marketing.

"Take a picture of yourself using giga pixel camera", no one would give a crap about that. They are targeting popular stuff, getting free advertising(this thread is example of it), this should go viral pretty fast.

Well there is a difference between just being monitored by security cams and the occasional picture by a stranger. This however is super high res and in a public place like a beach... That just seems very weird to me

ianal (I am a random person online just giving an opinion), but my understanding is Australia is a lot like the US in this regard. If you're out in public, you're fair game. It's up to you to not make openly visible what you don't want to be public. I know there are other countries like France, where that's not the case.

Yeah I know I know, but that feels different to me. No one will stand there all day taking pictures unless they are really creepy people. This just makes everyone using that app immidiatly very creepy in my opinion. I know that its public space and people can take pictures of you without you knowing already, but that still doesn't change the fact that this just feels different to me.

SNIP

Really? My immediate thought was, this is a really cool and fun idea, you can get a nice family photo of you all stood on the beach etc

I think somebody sneakily taking photos is 10x worse than a camera that is clearly known to the public
