Stick or Auto? (Car)

For those of you learning or have passed, what is your preference? 

 

I prefer stick since that is what I learnt and have not driven an auto ever, nobody in my immediate family drives auto, all stick. Its only my extended family who drive autos apart from one of my uncles. 

 

Auto does seem nice, I mean no clutch control and fear of stalling what so ever.

i feel like driving stick is like making your own ice cream. it's fun, but just buying it at the store is SO much more practical.

Autos are great for stop and go traffic. Manuals are a giant pain when you have to inch forward. A manual is good for when you want to have fun. I use a manual because my left foot feels twitchy otherwise. But for practicality an auto is the way to go.

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

as im going for my license in a month or two, ive driven my dads dodge diesel stick and my mom cross over which is an auto, and i drive a motorcycle which is obviously manual :P, for me in town id say id go with auto cause its a bitch to sit there in traffic holding in the clutch, but if it was my secondary car to go have fun every once in a while id more than likely want a stick because its just fun to actually be evolved with the car when driving, but id have to go with an auto where i live for my daily just due to traffic and stuff

Stick becomes second nature once you learn it.  It usually also saves you gas and money on repair costs.  Automatic transmissions cost a lot more to service (computer controlled, more expensive trans fluid, more expensive trans parts).

If you're not in front or you know the light isn't coming up, don't hold your foot on the clutch.  Use the dead pedal :)

just leave it on the steering wheel, never have to touch the gear lever again. At first glance, it would feel real odd when you don't need to change gears unless the car supports semi auto shifting.

Stick is cheaper than auto but stick is fading into the past, less newer cars have the option.

In that situation I just use the clutch itself, inch slowly forward, then stop, but yeah its an issue for your foot.

Stick as you can get better millage and if you know what you are doing make your car last longer and less wear on the brakes.

Honestly, I prefer auto for daily driving. It requires less thought, and attention on what im doing with my hands, which makes long trips especially or running errands a lot easier for me.

 

When I actually WANT to drive? I prefer stick. Greater control of the cars acceleration and handling. Also, just feels different.

 

I guess this is reflected in the cars I drive, got my Acura TL3.2 for daily driving and commute. Then have my 05' NSX for when I'm not doing tedious boring stuff.

Stick becomes second nature once you learn it.  It usually also saves you gas and money on repair costs.  Automatic transmissions cost a lot more to service (computer controlled, more expensive trans fluid, more expensive trans parts).

that's why i like older cars, no computer bull crap just vacuum controls, the camaro im working on with my step dad as out project car is a 5 speed auto and its all vacuum controlled timing and shifting, but ya auto trans are expensive to replace, and half the time the computers and sensors will fail before the actual mechanical components, some times tech is good and some times we should just stick to good old mechanical solutions

It's actually pretty sad when I ask people here if they would want to learn manual, they say no  :blink:

just leave it on the steering wheel, never have to touch the gear lever again. At first glance, it would feel real odd when you don't need to change gears unless the car supports semi auto shifting.

Stick is cheaper than auto but stick is fading into the past, less newer cars have the option.

In that situation I just use the clutch itself, inch slowly forward, then stop, but yeah its an issue for your foot.

i have adhd so it help to think about the gears and its normally where i rest i my hard now.

I prefer stick, because the one time my parents drove in an automatic car, I kept thinking "c'mon, change gears please already". The RPM of the motor (what's the word... completely forgot it) was way too high in my, and my parents opinion. And automatic usually isn't present in kind of old cars (our current cars are 12 and 26 years old). Those are two of the many more reasons why my parents and me prefer stick.

well the part of town i live in isnt bad but its if i got a kob in the city and the drive beck would be deadly, its a good km of bumper to bumper depending on the day :P

I used to be "MANUAL OR DIE" in the past. But nowadays i'm not too bothered to be honest

Currently looking to replace my manual golf with something automatic since i mostly commute to the store and uni prep.

 

For a fun secondairy car. Manual. Hands down. (Or Auto with a full manual valve body)
