Is the AMD FX-6300 a good CPU to pair with the R9 270x?

Yes it should be fine, I would get a R9 280 or R9 285 since they are around the same price.

I3 for the upgrade path and it performs very similar to a FX6 and in tons of cases better. You can't upgrade a GPU last a 380/280x because the fx chips will hold any stronger GPU back. Also with a i3 you can easily up to a i5 or even i7

But he still did mention the ability to upgrade, a G3258 and a cheap Z97 board is a good combo as well for upgrading

The ability to upgrade is really nice. If he gets a G3258 now, he'll get absolute crap performance in a lot of games for a while until he can upgrade

An i3 or i5 is going to worlds better. For that matter a G3258 would be.

But beware that you need a good motherboard such as MSI 970 Gaming, AM3+ or BETTER!

 

But on the Intel side a Pentium or i3 may be ugraded later...
