Rant About the GTX 950

byalexandr

Don't read if you don't want to, I'll put a TL;DR at the end.

So I was going through my subscriptions this morning (or to me it's morning as I just woke up even though it's almost 1PM) and since I'm subscribed to Nvidia I watched the GTX 950 launch ad. Now before I get started, the reason the 750 Ti sold so well was because:

1. It's cheap, you can even buy a nice used one for $80.

2. It didn't require PCI-E power connections on most models. I'll come back to this later.

3. It still had a lot of power even without the PCI-E connections.

So while I was watching the 950 ad, I noticed that the Witcher 3 gameplay was around 30 FPS. I thought, okay fine, it's only a 950. LoL ran fine at god knows what FPS since a potato could run that. But then I thought to myself, wait, the 750 Ti gets literally the same performance in the Witcher 3, within a margin actually. Then I said, why would anyone buy the 950, besides the fact that it's newer, when the 750 Ti is not only cheaper, but also uses less power despite being first gen Maxwell architecture, and produces almost the same amount of power? Hell the 950 is almost as expensive as the 960 (although these launch prices are bound to go down to like the $120-130 region). I get that Nvidia wants this card to be not an upgrade for the 750 Ti users, but for the 500 and 600 series users, like people with the 650 Ti Boost and all. But my point is, the 750 Ti still beats the 950 in my mind. The requirement of an 8-pin PCI-E power connector, at least according to all of the new products on Newegg's page, is ridiculous. That completely rules out this card for gamers with crappy OEM PCs that have shitty PSUs that don't even have PCI-E power. That's the reason the 750 Ti outsold the 260X too. So the question is, if Nvidia really wanted to make people upgrade, why didn't they give it more power since it's already drawing more power (no pun intended)? I get that it's so it doesn't compete with the 960, but everyone recommends a 280X instead of a 960 already, why not make the 950 have the same power at a cheaper price so it revives the sales at that price point? Anyway, just a rant. I think AMD wins in the budget performance market, since Nvidia is headed the same route with tons of power draw, even on Maxwell architecture. That is all.

TL;DR The 750 Ti still seems like a better upgrade for 500 or 600 series users than the 950. GG Nvidia.

Compare the 950 to the 750, not 750 Ti. (Dunno if that changes anything, I don't have all the info on hand, but yeah that's what it compares to)

Compare the 950 to the 750, not 750 Ti. (Dunno if that changes anything, I don't have all the info on hand, but yeah that's what it compares to)

So? It's like $10 more to go with a 750 Ti. Still a better upgrade IMO.

Nvidia aren't stupid, they will make you want to buy their 950 over the 750 Ti.

So far they haven't made me want to.

Oh I agree 100%, Nvidia wants money. But by doing this they basically give AMD the profits in the budget market, since they're making the same type of card as them now anyway.

Well if you try and find a used GPU, you're going to have a hard time finding a 750. Everyone buys a 750 Ti, in fact a while back someone mentioned that their 750 is rare becasue everyone else went for the 750 Ti. That and the 750 Ti is still cheaper than the 950.

Even new the 750 Ti is $50 cheaper, and drawing less power it still gets to marginal performance of the 950.

The 750 Ti was never cheap o.0 It performed like a 260X and cost the same as a 270X. Locally at any rate it shares a price-point with a 960.

I don't know what you were expecting. If you want a x50 class product now, get a 950, if you are upgrading it's not worth it unless you're on 600 series or older. Same as always. Who buys a low end card every year anyway?

A FTW GTX 950 vs a stock 750 Ti. Overclocking helps a lot you know, I didn't read anywhere that they OC'd the 750 Ti, and the 950 FTW comes with an overclock from the factory.

There will be no 950 Ti, the difference between 950 and 960 is 256 Cuda cores, no need for a 950 Ti with with 896 Cuda core since it would make both useless.

Fine, reference to reference Techpowerup still finds a 45% advantage. The 750 Ti gets rekt by the 950.
