Below is my current build list... first time building a PC, been a Mac guy since 2004.  Budget is $3000 tops for the whole build.

Right now I have the Nvidia GTX 980 Ti. Since I will be working primarily in Premiere and After Effects with a little bit in Cinema4D, is this the best option to fit in the budget.

Also, feel free to make suggestions on this build besides the GPU. Since this is my first build, sort of doing this blind.

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($328.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Maybe get a x99 mobo, 5820k and ddr4 ram. You DONT need 32gbs of ram. 16gbs is plenty.

Start with one 980Ti. You don't have to spend all $3000 at once so start with 16gbs if ram, a single 980Ti and if you don't like the performance you are getting with one get another. If you find yourself using 14 or more GBs of ram get another 16 ect ect. Also the SSD looks a bit expensive. Get a Samsung 256gb 850Evo. Also I didn't notice a HDDs for mass storage

If you drop to 16gb ram, get a cheaper PSU you could probably switch the Titan X out for 2x 980ti

This one is really sweet in my opinion. I would go for that in this scenario and application If I had the money (still, that's just my opinion).

I already have 4TB external storage as well as several loose internal 1TB drives

@stealth80 that PSU is completely useless and overpriced. A 980Ti vs a TitanX it's honestly 2-3fps difference so you misewell just get a single 980Ti.

Why's it useless lol is it churning out chocolate fireguards lol? I left it in there for headroom incase he goes Titan X sli and watercooling etc. And yes the titan X is only marginally better, even at 4k. I'm just highlighting what can be bought for $3000

This is strictly a work machine, no gaming.

Does the software benefit from more CPU cores? If so, I'd use the single 980ti and try to allocate for a 5960X (8 core) in the build, or focus on a lower cost but higher core count Xeon part-- work machine means stability is most important, so overclockability and overclocking features aren't necessary. No need to pay extra for that.

If you already have the 980ti, then you should be set for GPU, but if not-- look into a Quadro or Titan X, depending on if a Quadro or the Titan X's extra 6GB of Vram will make a difference.

I would also disagree with the folks here-- I would rather have 32GB of ram on a work machine.

I would go with:

CPU: 5960X or Xeon (eg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117479&cm_re=xeon_processor-_-19-117-479-_-Product)

CPU cooler: All in one water cooler of your favorite flavor, more for quietness than anything

Motherboard: whatever supports the processor

RAM: 32 GB

GPU: as above
