The new release of the Intel Core i5-6600K has got me thinking. I already have all my parts picked out for my i5 4690K (RAM, MOBO). I did some calculations and it looks like I could build a skylake rig for around $120 more. Is it worth the money? Is the new i5 "K" really that much better?

In terms of performance, no it's not worth it.  In terms of having the latest tech, newest features, future upgradability etc, YES it is worth it (IMO).

You're only really paying for extra motherboard features, in terms of performance it's not worth the price increase I would put that money else where into your system

no, it runs hotter and the 4690k is pretty much able to keep up with it with a decent overclock

sorry, all reviews ive seen so far show the exact opposite. Can you please link a source?

Get the 6600k if you can aford it.

If you can afford it you won't regret getting it.

If you can afford it you will regret not getting it.

In 2years DDR4/PCIE lanes/USB3.1/ect. will be standard and you will either be glad you got it already.... OR you will be looking for an excuse to build a new computer.

the 6600k has a 91 watt tdp, it is therefore hotter at stock than a 4690k, which runs at 88 watts max stock.

By that token, my overclocked 95 Watt Core i5-750 should be burning a hole in my case. Instead, my H80i keeps it under 60°C even in Prime95. Haswell, even with an 88 Watt TDP, runs far hotter.

TDP tells us the energy output, it doesn't tell us how well the package is able to disperse that heat. Most reviews seem to suggest Skylake uses the same thermal interface material that Devil's Canyon did, so my guess is that it ends up running at a similar temperature.

no, you probably can spend that 120$ better elsewhere on your rig...better GPU, bigger SSD, nicer case...top quality fans and what not.

depends if you are upgrading everything then why not get the latest platform but if you already own 4690k then no point in buying skylake 6600k in terms of pure gaming. i have seen some videos of 6600k in gaming and its better then 4690k at least in new games like witcher 3 and gta 5

Do you think I could get i5 Skylake and mobo for 350? If not how much?

im sorry to tell you that you are wrong but Skylake runs cooler because of its different architecture. FIVR was removed to grand better thermal results, even on a higher power draw its cooler. I suggest you to read some reviews before you spread false information.
