We use these all the time to figure out who fudged up a Furuno Cat 5 patch cable in our Fire boats. They're great for troubleshooting when someone didn't crimp an end properly or got a pair backwards but they won't tell you how fast your network is performing.

 

A lot of premium motherboards in the days of yore featured the ability to run network cable checks from the BIOS. Usually when a Marvell controller was present in a high end board. That was handy.

Well that is a network check tool and cable tester. It tells you if a network jack from the wall is active. Not the actual test of speed.. and that's a recent tool. I've got the same one on my bench at work and it's from like 2009

 

 

It's all about sea.speakeasy.net speed tests.

No speedtest? I just download some big file off Microsoft. Like a service pack. Tells me exactly what my download speed is.

I also have a tool like that, but it doesn't measure the speed, just the 1 to 8 cable check things on the side there.

Haha, was too young to remember a lot of that stuff, or just didn't care. But i do remember when i was getting into guild wars and runescape 2 my father hooked up our place with ballin 300kbps, it was like, the shit for the time. My friend next door was still using dial-up and we had that crazy fast internet on the block. 

 

That number seems woefully unimportant now that I realize I get 75Mbps u/d
