PS4 Games can use more than 4.5GB of ram

qwertywarrior

We would like to clear up a misunderstanding regarding our "direct" and "flexible" memory systems. The article states that "flexible" memory is borrowed from the OS, and must be returned when requested - that's not actually the case.

The actual true distinction is that:

  • "Direct Memory" is memory allocated under the traditional video game model, so the game controls all aspects of its allocation
  • "Flexible Memory" is memory managed by the PS4 OS on the game's behalf, and allows games to use some very nice FreeBSD virtual memory functionality. However this memory is 100 per cent the game's memory, and is never used by the OS, and as it is the game's memory it should be easy for every developer to use it.

We have no comment to make on the amount of memory reserved by the system or what it is used for.

I don't get why people make such a big deal about these tiny hardware details that get released? I might be biased since I'm a die hard PC gamer, but I still find it hard to believe that a playstation guy would give a crap about stuff like this.

@Cacao. Likely, they don't understand what's being said anyways.

I don't get why people make such a big deal about it either, but I'm a Playstation guy who is a PC gamer.

I'm interested. Though it's not overly important.

We as pc gamers should have at least a passing interest in what the consoles are doing.

If they are optimising the hardware at their disposal; it would make their games better... and more importantly it would mean our pc games are better even moar!  :D  :D  :D  :D

Better consoles = better pc's. Simples.

I doubt that the PS4 having more than 4.5gb of flexible memory or direct memory (whatever) will change how I play BF4 at 5760x1080 at 120fps on my 2 water cooled titans :D

True, perhaps not BF4 because that is being designed to run on a 360/ps3 as well as a one/ps4, and the 360/ps3 only have 512mb of total memory. Imagine what BF5 (for example) would be like when it's designed to run on the one/ps4 solely with 4.5gb of memory available!
