Beginning to fold on my laptop, and I have a few questions.

Hey all,

For a while now I have been folding on my desktop, and to contribute more, I am going to begin to start folding on my laptop.

Laptop: MSi GE60 Apache Pro-003: Specs

  • CPU: i7-4710hq
  • GPU: GTX 860m

OK, so I have a question...

1) I am worried about thermals. On Intel's website, it states that the max temperature for the 4710hq is 100 degrees Celsius. While I am sure my laptop will not exceed this, I am still worried about it getting to ~80 and ruining or potentially damaging the parts. Do any of you fold on a comparable laptop and what are your temps?

Thank You

Build: CPU: i7-4790k @4.4 GHz 1.2v | GPU: Sapphire R9 380 Nitro | Memory: 16GB Evga SSC | Storage: 250GB 850 Evo, 1 TB Toshiba HDD | Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 7  | Cooling: Aigo T120 RGB | Case: NZXT S340 | PSU: Antec HCG 520w | OS: Windows 10 | Keyboard: Corsair K70, Cherry MX Reds | Mouse: Logitech G600 | Monitor: LG 27UD58-B | Headset: Audio-Technica M40x w/ Modmic and Bravo Audio V2 Tube Amplifier

for a laptop thats kinda it laptops (gaming) always run hot under load with the exception of some, personally i never experienced any overheating issues but i don't own a very heavy gaming laptop

If you want to kill your laptop :P go fold on it.

Get extra cooling for it seriously yes a laptop can get 100 degrees easily and that''s normal but if you are folding day in day out it will die.

SNIP

It should be fine, though personally I would not want to fold on a laptop due to heat, stress on the components and stress on the battery (unless you remove it)

I wouldnt recommend folding on a laptop by any stretch of the imagination, 80 (shouldnt) damage anything, but doing it for a long time can eventually lead to a lower life span. Sure what you want to do is for a good cause, but it will get hot as hell. If you're still keen on doing this jsut run it for 30 minutes and look at your thermals, if they're too high (90 ish) i'd back out

I wouldn't recommend folding on a laptop. Their components are, in my experience, much less resilient than standard PC components, and uninterrupted usage at full load will degrade them over time.

Right now, just folding on the cpu and not the gpu (which in this laptop share the same heat pipe and only one fan) I am around 83 degrees on the cpu. I am sure with the gpu folding aswell, my temps will reach into the 90's

well, you're "fine" then. For the long term I still wouldnt recommend using a laptop, but I assume this wont be on all the time right and only when you're using it? or do you plan to run it 24/7

I hadn't exactly decided on that, but now that I think of it more, I am not going to fold on it at all.

Folding on a laptop using the Chrome Client is what I do. Lot less PPD, but still contributing and manages the thermals a LOT better, especially at "low".

Yeah, that. I have no experience in folding, but I assume its similar to prime95 in which it cases your system to work at 100%. Which is not what laptops are designed to do for long periods of time, even gaming laptops. A cheap desktop with an old GPU would be much better to fold on (I believe) than a laptop.

I have been using the Firefox client on my desktop, as I can't figure out how to get the real client running. :/ I
