In my opinion: Q6600, because it's nice for overclocking, it's cheap,...

I see alot of q6600's, are they good enough for some games like gta v (low settings) and racing games like the crew and such?

I snagged a q9550s for 75 on e bay not to long ago. Can usually find a q9550 a little less than that

What motherboard do you have? Chipset and RAM type make a big difference in 775. If your board is limited to a 1066MHz FSB speed you won't be able to use Q8x00 and Q9x00 series chips, you'll be stuck with the Q6600 and QX6750.

If you're stuck with an 800MHz FSB limit you're even worse off.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

All LGA775 CPU's have the same stock cooler. It will run GTA V with those components, but an Xeon x5450 is usually cheaper and faster when OC'd. BTW my cousin has q6600@3.2Ghz with GTX 750 and has no problems running GTA V @1080p with normal graphics. He usually gets 60fps, but it can dip in mid 40's.

That's not ideal but it'll work. G43 chipset will let you run Q9x00 chips no problem but probably won't run Extremes. Also no overclocking so get the fastest base chip you can. No Q6600, go for a Q9300 at the least.

How did he overclock it?

Actually I overclocked it for him :D . OC'ing was as easy as raising FSB from 266 to like ~345( I don't remember how much precisely ) and upping core voltage, FSB voltage and north-bridge voltage.

(sorry for asking) so i order the cpu, remove the stock cooler, get out the old cpu, clean that off, put it in the plastic thing that came with my new cpu, now, do i have to order new thermal paste? Yes right? If so, i place the cpu in it's socket, put on a little bit of thermal paste, apply the cooler, and then power it up? Do i have to uninstall drivers before i change the cpu?

Well someone just told me that with my current mobo i can't overclock :( so i chose a q9550 that runs on 2,80 ghz.

What are you talking about? Overclocking can be done trough FSB( blck in new MB's ).

I think he hasn't experienced LGA775 socket. Back at the time locked CPU's overclocked trough FSB, but now new CPU's can OC very little with it ( it is now called blck ).
