Dota 2, a game that has almost single-handily brought Esports to where it is today, is now toting the largest prize pool in Esports' History. An astounding $15,160,000+ usd Pool for the top 14 teams. As a slight comparison, the other top 5 previous record holders are,

It's hard to believe that only 4 years ago Dota 2 was breaking headlines again with it's $1,600,000 prize pool. A number that many in news media claimed was beyond belief for a video game. Now, only 4 short years and many, many more achievements later the Dota 2 international has come around once again, gaining immense momentum, ballooning it's prize pool higher than and faster than any other Esports prize pool in history, by a factor of almost 10.  This is a momentous occasion, perhaps soon Esports can finally be given some of the respect it deserves here in the western world.

I feel that Esports pretty soon here perhaps can be finally shown some respect in the western world, as it does in much of Asia. It requires superhuman levels of reaction speeds and thought processing, something that only a hallowed few can do with effective results. I honestly believe that the prize pool will continue to grow to around 18 million here easily. It shoots up as much as 1.5 million with the release  of new compendium chests and rewards, there being a whole plethora of new chests coming soon here, and more items to buy up that will continue to raise the pool.

if it's taken seriously rules wise and everything (hint hint CSGO) and if they add more tournaments then eventually it'll start to gain even more traction then it already has whether TV companies start to follow it or not.

I don't think they would do that for the International. I belive it'll be split up, but 1st price taking a majority of the prize pool.

The Winner is given around 50% of the total prize pool. Far from a "winner take all" stance. Last year, with a pool of just over 10 million the first place team walked away with 5.3 million of it. All 14 teams that place in the tournament are paid, regardless of where they rank, that only merely reflects the amount they are paid. It is a tournament after all, and not everyone can win! Their plane tickets, hotels, food, and transportation are all paid for as well. Not to mention the huge amounts of money these teams get from their sponsors during the TI.

With some checking, I found the ratios they use.

 

Prize pool percentages, as per last year were:

1. 46% or 5.02 million
2. 13.5% or 1.4 million
3. 9.5% or 1.03 million
4. 7.5% or 820K

   5-6th    6% or 655K

   7-8th    4.75% or 520K

   9-10th  0.45% or 50K

  11-12th 0.35% or 38K

  13-14th 0.2% or 21K

And dota is a large reason why Esports has had such huge prize pools of late. You could also argue that since LoL was a direct rip-off of the mod when it launched that LoL's fanbase in Esports owes it's origin to DotA. (Not Dota 2, the original mod DotA, the non-valve owned one. Icefrog's dota.)

The original dota didn't have a huge Esports scene doe. It was Dota 2 that brought us the prize pool revolution

As far as that goes, I'm pretty sure League of Legends is responsible for this. It is after all the most popular MOBA out there and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. I am talking about making esports popular, which this sentence implies, not about the huge prize pool which LoL will probably never have (although Riot has been experimenting with something similar with their Pool Party event - quite disappointing results though).

For sure, just like last year they'll probably end up adding more immortals after chest 3, a couple compendium sets, and perhaps even an abyssal under Lord release. There's plenty they could still do. Maybe even the desert map can get a full release

1. Opinions like that are extremely frowned upon here. I'd suggest keeping them to yourself if you intend to not be hated.

2. Have you even actually seen the guys that play in these professional matches? 90% of them are rather fit. You have to be to have the kinds of reaction speed these guys have. the chunkier professionals tend to play roles that don't require snap reaction speeds, like supports or junglers.

Top teir teams are actually preety strict when it comes to health. They have 4-8 hours of practice, but they also have physical exercise in their schedule plus a good diet. The chinese teams emphasize this very much. How else will they keep up with constant stress of traveling and tournament time differences.
