GTX 960 or R9 290?

Zuckonit

I'm currently looking at a new GPU. I'm stuck between the GTX 960 and the R9 290. Any help?  :D

I think the 290 is a better buy, unless you want to save power on energy or you're not going to be using the extra performance at all.

the r9 290 is miles  better than a 960, no competition.

The obvious answer is the 290.

That is until you start paying your electric bill.

The cheapest R9 290 is about $270.

If you have a shitty PSU, you'll need a 750 watt unit per manufacturer's requirement.  Good one is about $100.

It'll cost you $370.

GTX 960, cheapest is $180 for PNY reference.  4GB model is about $230.  300 - 400 watt PSU will work

If you're going to spend over $350 for a 290, fuck that and go with the GTX 970 and blow the 290 away.

This.

I made that mistake recently, if you decide to go with the 290 make sure you have a 700-750W, 60A+ @12V rail, quality PSU.

My old i5 4440 + 280X Vapor X used 493W at full load.

EDIT: Dat Typo ( ͡°( ͡° ͜ʖ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ʖ ͡°) ͡°)

What? Did you have 2 280x?

Nah. I use a 290 overclocked with a heavily overclocked FX 6300, and my 650W PSU is fine.

Sry typo, was 493W and no it was a single 280X.

Heavily OC'd Vapor-X Tri-X.

I have 2 in CF for now.

"overclocked" is a vague statement and your PSU might be a 80+Gold/Platinum one, mine was Bronze.

Even though little, there still is a difference.

I used this PSU tier list as reference, may not be 100% accurate but it's good enough.

Mine was a "tier III" now I have a "tier I" PSU.

I didn't have the tools to do it myself the dude in the PC shop told me and said the PSU needs to be replaced.

It was a 530W 80+ Xilence Performance A Series.

I am a proud Nvidia fan, but between those 2 cards, the R9 290 IS the better card! And a very good one.

This is true, save on the psu upgrade to a 970. :)

I'm sure he measured it from the wall. That's a below average PSU and 530w is not enough for a 280x especially when you overclocked it at 1.2v.
