How to Tell If a PSU is Quality

Russell450

Dont get scared away by those bad reviews on the cx430 for example. Most people have good experiences and don't bother to review their parts(like me).

I had wonderful experiences with my CX430M. Thing is awesome.

Since this is going into a prebuilt I wouldn't be going too wild on the psu. First you need to make sure that it will fit. Measure carefully. For that sort of machine I would look at the Antec Earthwatts series. Good quality, excellent pricing, but they don't look "cool". They also aren't modular or any sort of jazzy that is so attractive to the modder crowd. That said, they work. A 380W would do you just fine and it's in the old style with the fan in the back which might work better with that HP case. I doubt HP puts vents with dust screens in their cases for the psu like the regular case manufacturers do.

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!

Seasonic makes the best PSU's. Next would probably be Corsair. Then EVGA, for that list atleast

Corsair nor EVGA "make" PSUs

GO TO JONNY GURU.

Also, Corsair & EVGA PSUs don't catch on fire unless you put them on the wrong Power Rail (Like 240V or 100V)

Jonnyguru isn't the only PSU reviewer out there that will give you good information. HardOCP, TechPowerUp, etc. are also places to look.

I know, what I'm saying is that people shouldn't just be singling out JonnyGuru as there's other places that do great detailed PSU reviews as well and often cover units that JonnyGuru don't get to.

And seasonic isn't the best.

There is better, like delta and others

Sometimes they're the best for a certain price point (like they are currently with the EVGA GS), but at some price points there's OEM'd units by the likes of Super Flower that are better (G2)

I was looking for a replacement PSU for my HP desktop and I would like to know if a PSU will be quality. I looked at brands like Corsair and EVGA and I saw under reviews that they can smoke or catch on fire. I found one PSU that may be of some quality. That PSU is the EVGA 100-W1-0430-KR.

The ones that have the bad reviews are the Corsair CX430 and the EVGA 100-N1-0400-L1.

I have the 500 watt version of that EVGA PSU, and I haven't had any problems with it. Also, EVGA is an excellent brand so I would trust their power supplies. Corsair is also excellent.

CPU: AMD FX-6300 4GHz @ 1.3 volts | CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO | RAM: 8GB DDR3

Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A-DS3P | GPU: EVGA GTX 960 SSC | SSD: 250GB Samsung 850 EVO

HDD: 1TB WD Caviar Green | Case: Fractal Design Core 2500 | OS: Windows 10 Home

I am most likely getting the Corsair PSU because I need thermal paste, a new keyboard, and a mouse as well.

Thanks EVERYONE for your helpful comments! It helped A LOT! :D
