Processor question

Hey guys,

 

I was just wondering what is the best processor for a gaming PC that can also perform other tasks i.e editing. I would like at least 4-8 cores. I prefer Intel. I know I am probably missing alot of info, but please work with me haha. Thanks for sharing your expertise guys.

No budget? i7 5960X or that crazy 18 core Xeon.

Seriously though, what kind of budget do you have and do you want 6-8 cores or 6-8 threads?

4core/4thread: i5-4690k 229.99$ Best gaming CPU for the money.

 

4core/8thread: i7-4790k 328.99$ Much greater multi-threaded performance than the 4690k.

 

6core/12thread: i7-5820k 372.95$ Imo the best price/performance for someone who does a lot of multi-threaded workloads, but more expensive motherboard, and more expensive memory kits than the previous two cpus, so take this into consideration.

 

6core/12thread: i7-5930k 554.99$ Slightly higher clockspeed than 5820k, a lot more money, not really worth it.

 

8core/16thread: i7-5960x 999.99$ Overpriced, Overkill.

 

All of them are overclockable.

If you're going to be using heavily threaded applications such as editing software then an i7 will probably be the best choice as it has hyper-threading. For gaming an i5 is sufficient.

i5 4690K is basically the cream of the crop for gaming right now, and will do fantastic in editing too. If you do a LOT of editing, then you might consider the i7-4790K... it's not better than the 4690K in gaming by any significant margin but can shave a good amount of time off of video renders.

 

If you really wanna go hard, then there's the i7-5820K on X99 but that'll be a more expensive platform as X99 boards and DDR4 RAM are a bit more pricey.

Alright, see your edit now.

That budget should be enough for an i7 4790K, which has 4 cores and 8 threads or maybe an i7 5820K, which has 6 cores and 12 threads.

Gotta take into consideration higher price motherboards and memory kits though.  Unfortunately he only gave us a budget for the cpu, and not the entire system, and didn't give whether or not he was reusing parts from another system.  This thread doesn't make much sense at all imo.  A cpu does not a system make. Is that the correct saying?
