Changing mobo and CPU, should I format ?
My question is : Since I'm changing mobo and CPU, different drivers control the chipset, lan, audio, ... Should I be better off just formatting my boot drive and installing new drivers from scratch or should I scrutinize installed programs to try and uninstall whatever doesn't apply, boot with new mobo and then install new drivers ?
I'm going to assume you're fully capable of making your own choices as far as what is, and what is not a warranted upgrade, and just answer the damn question.
Short answer, no it is not completely necessary. However, you will be leaving remnants of the old drivers behind which in my experience is never the cleanest or "best" way to do things. Yes, you can uninstall but unless you're using software like CCleaner to wipe the registry of them as well it's not as fool proof as doing a fresh OS install. The exception to my personal always fresh install rule is if you're staying within the same essential equipment (same model of Intel NIC for example) or within the same chipset. This eliminates the possibility of any driver conflicts and if a piece of hardware on the MOBO doesn't work there's no, "is it not working because of my OS, or is it broken?".
Have fun with the upgrade!
