CHEAP Intel Quad Core

I'm building my computer with an MSI H81M-E33 mobo and an Intel Pentium G3258 LGA 1150 processor. I doing this because the CPU is cheap and unlocked. Can anyone recommend a CHEAP LGA 1150 quad core processor. I don't care if it's a i3, i5 or i7. I need a quad core for what I do.

The cheapest real quad core is probably the i5 4440, but you also have a dual core with hyper threading (so 4 threads) which is the i3 4160 for example.

If you're going the route of unlocked CPUs or plan to install an unlocked CPU down the road, I'd recommend a Z97 board instead. Even a low end one would be better.

I do video editing, virtual machines and I do a lot of work with ReactOS so that involves compiling which I need to not take very long. I've also seen in some of Linus's videos that some games they were using to test computers either refused to run on dual cores or ran slowly and crashed often.

Xeon 1231-v3 or 1230, whichever works OTB for the board you are going to be using. 4 cores 8 threads, very similar price point to the i5's; Basically a downclocked and locked i7. It would be better for your uses.

You're looking at garbage boards. Get an ASRock H97 Pro 4. Trust me. I know what I'm talking about. All the plebs who posted before me know nothing.

 

Get an i5 4460. It's not much more than the 4440 and you get a little boost in speed.

 

The best chip for you, budget and capability wise is the Xeon 1231v3 which is $230 vs the cheap i5's at $180 but it's a hyperthreaded quad core so is essentially an i7. It has no onboard graphics enabled though.

Can you perhaps recommend a Micro-ATX board from Asrock with the same IO? I would want the same type and amount of I/O as the MSI board?

Gaming doesn't seem to be your priority. An 8320 might actually be a decent choice for you. It's like $200 now, and the cheapest i5 (4440) is $50 more.

What kind of I/O are you talking about? 

If I may, please consider the fact that "I/O" (number of SATA/USB ports) should not be the deciding factor in buying a motherboard?

 

There is an mATX Pro 4 you just didnt bother to look.
