what does awful mean something bad and not something that will cause you to be full of awe 

and while we are on this why does are you up for it and are you down for it mean the same thing

 

edit: ok apparently it could mean something that causes you to be full of awe but why are there two completely opposite definition and why is the definition that doesnt make sense the most common one

I think the term you're looking for is "flexible" or "dynamic". Other languages have slang that becomes extremely common as well. My sister had trouble with her french when she went to France with some friends who lived there for a summer, because according to her, some of the slang is proper words said backwards or something.

 

It is somewhat sad that the term awful is now considered to be terrible, or unpleasant, when the correct original spelling "aweful" meant full of awe.

 

Languages evolve over time. At the rate society is going, language will eventually circle around to be little more than grunts and catch phrases (as idiocracy predicted)

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs
