Hey guys!

So I just bought my 'new' FX 6300. I love it, despite what people might say about the processor and AMD in itself. It's still no slouch compared to my old Athlon 7750. But I have been doing some research. Why is there literally nothing on AMD's 2014-2016 road map about the FX line or the AM3+ socket in general? I feel like (and I am pretty sure) they are abandoning the socket and the FX line. My question is:

Why haven't they said anything about it?

post-2597-0-95947900-1432089106.png

All they have on the road map are the 'new' APUs (judging AMD, nothing is REALLY new with them, lol) and I think AMD is finding a market in the budget buyers, but I still think AMD should keep trying at the performance market. I think they should take a lesson from what Intel has done and step up their game. I just really wish they wouldn't abandon the AM3+ socket for some low-end buyer's APUs. I know the new Zen 16 core chip is coming along, but I hope it is more power efficient and much more powerful (per core, not overall, and either way, I don't care about power efficiency, just look what I'm running) to compete with Intel, and actually drive the CPU market forward.

Also, do you guys think that APUs are actually viable replacements to traditional chips? Or do you think the technology is still to far behind? Do you think they can eventually compete with the likes of Intel? (or am I getting my hopes up?) (why so many questions?)

Anyway, just a rant. Let me know what you guys think. I really like AMD, and I hate to see them abandon a three generation old socket.

Thanks in advance!

It IS abandoned...

Why do you think theyre not releasing any new CPUs?

Their next line of chips will require a new socket

But are they THAT stupid to not say anything? Like "Sorry, but this socket is too old to continue serving the requirements for our newer CPU/APUs". Not so hard, is it?

APU =/= low end the 4790k is an apu just not labelled as such the zen apu CAN be powerful

I understand that, but AMD is focusing on the graphics aspect of the APU more than the CPU. Do you think there is a possibility that in the future AMD will solely manufacture graphics chips? Like Nvidia?

radeon

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

If they do that, people wouldn't buy it....so it's not as stupid as you say it is. Lol

But then misinformed people (just to say, I'm not misinformed, I actually wanted this chip for specific reasons...) would buy the product and not know what they got into. But, I guess that's what forums are for, right?

Wow, two years of a gap between sockets. Looks like I have long wait... Also, why the hell is it x86?! I don't want no 32 bit OS!

AM4 is coming next year, and if the theoretical 40% increase is true and the new CPUs are 14nm, then yes, they can compete with Intel.

Also, APU architecture has scary potential. They're pretty much the future for computing IMO.

Lol, made my night. I would totally buy that, and it must be a massive chip if they stuffed those two together.

That would cause them to drop in market share though

Quite a few people still buy into the "more cores+higher frequency=better performance"

The term "x86" came into being because the names of several successors to the Intel's 8086 processor ended in "86", including 80186, 80286, 80386 and 80486 processors.

the 64-bit is just instruction added into a processor

it doesn't matter all 64-bit processor is backward system with 32-bit, hence the name "x86" still applied.

I understand that. I just thought the Zen APU was going to be SOLELY 32-bit. That would suck.

They can do both.

That wasn't the question.

I could see this happening in its own way. AMD may be smart and one day I bet there APUs will be good for medium end gaming at 1440p ( obviously when this happens 1080p will be dead, it's already going downhill fast). Could you imagine? The potential in APUs, no massive GPU and all water coolers would be simple. Mobos will be a lot smaller. I actually can see this happening. HDDS and SSDs one day will be you slide them in to a slot to, no wire bull crap. Straight onto them mobo would be a sata power connector for them. In my eyes the next 5 or so years a pc is gonna so easy to put together a 10 year old could do it.

Am3+ has been abandoned for quite some time. I also believe AMD did say something about it a while back.

I like rooting for the little guy, but after getting burned by AMD abandoning the AM3+ platform, I am a little gun shy about buying any future "performance" CPUs from them. I was hoping to upgrade to an excavator FX 8 core chip by now.

Yeah, its been known for a very long time now that AM3+ was doing to go down hill fast. We knew this back in september of 2013, when AMD's roadmap changed excavator to FM2, instead of AM3+. If you want proof of this information, its not hard to find.

You can even read the comments, people knew back in 2013 that Excavator was going to be FM2. While AMD themselves will not admit that AM3 is dead (i mean really, why would they? It would only hurt them and the consumers as a whole), they will continue releasing whatever revisions of the current line-up as they can. I do think they ran out of tricks after the 8370, but i would not buy AM3 when thinking about future gaming. Direct X 12 might alleviate some of its shortcomings, but if you are in need of a good CPU now, i would aim for an i5. If you do not mind waiting, Zen will be here within the next year or so. Gives AMD another chance to try to impress us again.
