AMD FX-8350 vs Intel i5 4690k

I know the 4690k has is a formidable cpu, but is it worth considering the amd for a more budget orientated build? Intended pc use is gaming, cad and programming as well as light photo/ video editing

Thanks!

The FX-8350 will be great for all of those things, multiasking wise. However, you have to take into consideration that 970 am3+ boards are much pricier than 1150 motherboards, so really you're paying almost the same for either setup. an i5 would be better for gaming, so if your PC is going to be heavy on that then you may want to go with the 4690k.

no

the 4690k will perform almost always better

it works perfectly fine for cad and editing, it might just be a few minutes longer to render something than the 8350

but it actually leaves you room to upgrade in the future if you want

I wouldn't.  I mean, you could, but expect less performance in games.  CAD and video editing might scale well with the extra cores, but honestly it shouldn't be much of a difference.

If gaming is your primary focus, the 4690k is far ahead of the 8350.

Intel all the way, it is more efficient and will by far out preform the AMD cpu in all of those cases. I recently completed a build and these two were both options but my client went with the intel and surely did not regret it.

how ever i would still suggest a 4690k, because it has a stronger single core strength, and it may be slower in rendering out things, but it will be more fluent while using such programs. plus it has a better upgrade path

although i would suggest a xeon 1230 v3 since it will perform better than either cpu in everything other than gaming, since it is basically a 4770

You won't save much money going with the 8350 due to having to get an expensive motherboard. i5 is good enough for all of your needs (better than the 8350 in most settings).

Have you considered the Xeon though? Better choice than both the 8350 and the 4690K.

Haven't considered the Xeon, would it be worth looking into?

The i5 is the better choice for gaming and about equal for light photo editing, not very significantly slower for video rendering. Not only that but it leaves the door open for much better future upgrades with a 4790k available if you do need more power for video editing and rendering. With the 8350 you're basically committing to having no upgrades available without also upgrading your motherboard and likely your ram too (By 2016 it will likely be ddr4 only for new AMD chipsets)

As much as I like your recommendation and you, he's also looking to use it for video editing, and CAD software. I rank all productivity ahead of gaming when picking a processor.

I'm almost positive the i5 renders faster than the 8350, even with CAD, but I could be wrong.

Dem fanboys, benchmarks are benchmark, if you dont have tried both you cant speak mate.

So with the xeon, I'm basically losing out on gaming? Tbh I'm not a 'hardcore' gamer. Mainly league of legends (no hate pls). But I would definitely look to expand my library with a better pc

Definitely worth it. It is basically an i7 for i5 pricing and you can save on the motherboard by going with a sub 100.00 b85 board. You basically get the best of both gaming and productivity.

Not at all. It is every bit as strong as the i5 at stock (technically slightly weaker but you couldn't notice the difference)

Okay cool. Well in that case, any Xeon recommendations? Also, off the top of my head, you can't oc the Xeon, right? and if I went with a Xeon build would it leave any room for future upgrading?

even without an OC you'll be fine for years. the sweet spot xeon, and the one everyone here is talking about is the E3 1231 V3. you can overclock it slightly with the base clock but that is pretty tricky to do. if you get a xeon, just pair it with a decent b85 board or h87/h97 with the features you want and you'll be good to go. hard to go wrong with motherboards for a xeon.

I don't get it, what's the upgrade path from a 4690k? A 4790k later on? Might as well just buy the 4790k from the beginning then. Broadwell sure doesn't look impressive outside of the IGP.

There is no reasonable upgrade path since Skylake will use LGA1151. I love my Xeon E3-1231v3, it keeps my GTX 970 at 100% GPU usage in games, and runs really cool (and on the stock cooler) at a low voltage, and was only $10 more than an i5-4690k (though it's locked; I'd rather have the hyperthreading than the unlocked multiplier myself).
