Well, I thought I knew what I wanted to do for a career, but after getting two bachelor degrees (Criminal Justice and English - focused on writing), I'm finding that I really enjoy computers/IT. I'm now trying to get a job in the IT field, preferably as a tech writer, while at the same time getting a bunch of IT and programming certifications so that I can eventually move over to cyber law enforcement/security.

Game Development. It's always been my passion, and the driving force behind my current study at University for a major in Video Game development, with a minor in Computer Hardware Engineering.

But considering that is a subset of Software Engineering, i guess that to a degree, but with mixed skills in 3D modelling and artistic design.

just don't be a professional student. that's a dead-end career and a resume killer. employers want to hire people they can mould to their company.

Probably Engineering, specifically Computer engineering, but if that doesn't work out nice to have experience in general engineering. (Looking towards the future computer related jobs probably going to go up.)

Might want to look into that if you haven't already. That is what i was told many times, and started classes to become a network engineer.

Then, after a year and talking to many in the profession - this is no longer the case. There are many low-level engineers because everyone has been saying they need them - and now theres not enough jobs. This was 4-5 years ago, so, may be different now.

I'll have my CCNA in a few weeks ;) Then finishing up my bachelors in Microsoft Server administration. I've also got a few job offers already, one from Cisco, for when I finish my bachelors. Still debating on my options though. I'm two weeks from twenty years old, I've got some time to weigh my options :P

For me?

I want to do aid work overseas and here in the US - specifically using computers, networking and radio. As a part of that, teaching people how to use computers better, so they can get better jobs. This is something that would aid both middle age folks here in the US, all the way down to poverty-stricken areas where very little computer use happens.

Basically, I want to make people's lives better through the use of Technology.

Awesome!

Maybe a few years made a difference and/or my area as well. I just feel back for my classmates. I've run into several who graduated.....and now work at best buy and similar stores.

At the very least....database and server admins are always in demand.

I'm at Staples now, but it's very much so a college job. I needed something within walking distance, and flexible hours for school. I love the people, hate the job, and can't wait to get out. Today is my 1 year working there. I'll keep it until the summer, then take up one of the internship offers, and explore my options from there :P

Sounds like you have a solid plan.

I also feel bad (well, no, not really) for people who expect jobs immediately after college. I always expected to get internships to build up my work experience.

I'm still in high school, so I could change my mind, but I am either going into the medical field or the computer engineering field. I think I am going to become a surgeon (not going to pick a path until internships and residency, but neurosurgery has always been kinda cool.) I will probably work a lot with computers as a side gig, but I do not know how much time I would have if i worked a job like that.

Hell, I don't expect a job at all. I expect to work my ass off to earn one. With the offers I've gotten, I've worked hard to earn. Second in my class, I attend every conference I'm invited to, and any contest I can participate into. Anything to make my resume look better. I feel like I'm busting my ass now so I don't have to as much later. Like I said though, I expect to work for a position, I don't expect to be handed one.
