Apparently I own too much computer stuff...... (Is that possible?)

DevilishBooster

That place is a mess, organised mess at least :D

Well, it's a mess in that the area shown in the pictures is about 6ft x 10ft total with: 1.5 desks, an office chair, a filing cabinet, a worktable, 2 book shelves, and all this computer stuff mashed in. Trust me, I wish I had more space. I've spent a lot of hours figuring out how to efficiently organize it.

What are you using them for? I want to try scooping up GPUs for cheap that that I can build a Folding-farm.

Just gaming but I just bought a 4k monitor and I have a mitx machine so can only use one card so hunting down the highest overclocking gtx 780 ti that can fit. My case isn't compatible with the classy or lightning cards because of the extra PCB height.

Nice. I thinking about starting to go around to government/estate auctions to see if I can grab tons of computers/parts for cheap.

Judging by the age and the pure randomness of these computer stuff you have "collected" i would thing you are either a hoarder or a bandit or both which would be very funny to me if i was a cop and i arrested you. The number of jokes i would be making would be endless.

No, not a beggar and/or a hoarder, just a broke recent college grad trying to learn all kinds of systems/OS's and get some IT certifications so that I can get a job in the area of cyber law enforcement. When people give me stuff I check to see if it's usable and if I have a use for it. If it's junk then it goes to the local recycling center, if it's usable but I don't have a use for it then I try to sell it for cheap online. I've probably recycled at least 25% of the stuff that was given to me.

looks like the office space of an old computer shop i used to work at.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

Just messing with you about the beggar/hoarder thing.

You should recycle all of it and get some money for an upgrade for your system or just put some money in your bank account.

Some of it is still useful. I'm going to be using the Athlon 64 X2 I have to put together a home server.

I have you beat, no doubt about it. I work as an IT and I get all of the old stuff. Probably have over 100 towers, 50 monitors, several boxes of ram and hdds, and about 30 pounds of cables.

That would be expected if you're working in IT. I'm just getting started in really learning IT, so the point is I was laughing at the fact people already think I own too much computer stuff.

I remember many years ago i had a shed full fo ancient computers galore. I was learning from just playing around with different bits at the time. anyway one of the thigns i remember most is  there was a stupid about pentium II/celerons based on that chip for some reason. didn't see many pentium pros,386, and stuff from before that. Old crt monitors aged really well  after a certain point in time.

i still have a cupboard wiht the more fun bits still.

To be fair, that's not a ton of stuff, but it is fairly unorganized and looks fairly messy.

All it takes is an hour or two and some care and that room could look so much better and not bother anyone.

OP you have a lot of PC stuff that is completely useless and it only taking up space. Some might consider this hoarding.

I would chuck the pile of 20 year old desktops beside the desk, and tidy up loose trinkets on your desk because I'm a neat freak. But other than that you don't have enough.

There's no such thing as too many computers, that said I've got computers/computer components lying all over the place. The only rules I limit myself with is that I need to come up with a justification for each computer I have and I need to keep the power bill to reasonable levels. I have a lot of trouble with that second rule....

It's was kind of a "tongue in cheek" post poking fun at the people who are already saying I have too much. I know that it's really not that much

It's actually very organized. As stated in several posts above I have everything sorted into bins/drawers, with only a few mobos (that I'm working on cleaning and testing) and stuff that is too large to fit in a drawer sitting open on the shelves. It looks really cluttered because I have fit a LOT of stuff crammed into a very small space. I also am very organized in that I have created an inventory spreadsheet set up that documents every single component that I have and which machine has what parts. Also, keep in mind that I took this pic halfway through my day while I was working on 4 computers at once.  :)

OP you have a lot of PC stuff that is completely useless and it only taking up space. Some might consider this hoarding.

Lol, it's not hoarding, but I get what you mean. Everything I have kept is useful in some way and will be used for something. I'm going to be using all the Pentium systems to put together a Beowulf cluster whiel learning networking. Trust me, I have already recycled at least half as much stuff as I have now. And I don't worry about it, I was making it as a joke towards the people saying I have too much. I'm using the old cases (that I got all for free) to practice case modding so that I'm not dropping a lot on money on brand new cases, only to cut them up.

Also, I wish I could have a dedicated car work area like yours. I love working on cars and I have plans all laid out for a kick-ass autocross/rally car. Now all I need is the money for it....  :(

I would chuck the pile of 20 year old desktops beside the desk, and tidy up loose trinkets on your desk because I'm a neat freak. But other than that you don't have enough.

The 20yo PCs are the crown jewels! They are complete systems (only needing HDDs, which I'm working on acquiring). I'm working on resurrecting early windows machines, and all I really need to do is create some install floppies. Also, the loose trinkets on the desk are there because I was in the middle of my "workday" with multiple projects.

Those are kind of the same rules that I've given myself. Since I'm planning on building a group of folding machines, I've been thinking that I'm going to invest in some of those wall-socket Watt meters so that I can get an idea of what each machine pulls so that I can plan for the bill appropriately (and make sure the wiring can handle it :P ).
