No they're not necessary.

 

What it is is essentially two fittings that lock together, but can be taken apart without leaking any of your coolant.

Its not necessary but it allows you to unplug your block from the loop without needing to drain the full loop.

Not neccesary but if you change parts a lot it helps, you can just unplug the piece from the system and change it with something else and plug it back in.

Here is an example;

Draining loop = pull one of the fittings out under a bucket :D
