GTX 770 lightning vs HD 7970 lightning help pls

Nymo
Go to solution Solved by CarlosRex,

i dont mind the 3 slots card.

in every single website that i look to compare the 770 lightning is better then the 7970 lightning or the ROG version: http://gpuboss.com/gpus/MSI-GeForce-GTX-770-vs-ASUS-ROG-Radeon-HD-7970

i still use a xfx 5770 in a small screen so i whant to get the best between those 2 cards.

That website is an abomination.

7970 Ghz and 770 trade blows, but the 7970 Ghz does come out with significant wins in games like Crysis 3, tomb raider, sleeping dogs and hitman absolution.

It even outperforms the GTX 780 in many cases.

Keep in mind that the 7970 lightning is clocked significantly higher than the 7970 Ghz edition, so the performance difference is going to be even larger.

I would choose the 770, it performs about the same if not a bit better, it's a generation ahead and you get stuff like GPU boost 2.0, so you can overclock much easier. What resolution will you be gaming at (assuming you're gaming)? The extra VRAM of the 7970 might come in handy at 1080p+ resolutions.

7970 or 4gb 770. a 2gb 770 probably wont last 4-5 years.

At that resolution I would go for the 770. You might want to invest in the 4gb version though, it will definitely help in longevity (since you want to make it last 4-5 years).

The 770 is a 680 with faster ram, hasn't really got any new tech, it was even slower than the 680 in Linus's overclocked benchmarks thanks to GPU boost 2.0 causing issues.

The current 7970 lighting is clocked at 1150mhz, which is the highest clock ever for the 7970, it also has unlocked voltage so you can overclock it even more, it's got more VRAM than the 770 & doesn't suffer nearly as much with higher resolutions & larger textures thanks to its wider memory buss.

You also might want to consider the 7970 Matrix.

matrix is 3 slot card it makes it look ugly

That's a terrible website to compare graphics cards, it's going to be extremely difficult to find a review that contains both the 7970 lightning and the 770 lightning because they were both launched at completely different times.

The only comparisons you're going to find are going to be based on data that doesn't reflect real world performance just like gpuboss.

The only good comparison is the one where Linus does the matrix against the 680 lightning, keeping in mind the 770 is exactly the same as a 680, the only difference is the faster vram which only affects performance on 2560x1440 or higher.

Even if you compare performance figures now for the 770 & the 7970 based on individual reviews when each card was launched, the 7970 will only seem slower because it would have been running 12 month old drivers so it's not going to reflect real performance.

Based on eveyrthing we know about the 770 & the 7970, the 7970 is faster than the 770 when both are running at the same clocks, but the 7970 can be clocked higher because of its unlocked voltage control, so it will be the definitive winner.

There are also other things worth mentioning, like for example the 7970 is significantly better at higher resolutions (this includes anti aliasing because it essentially enlarges the image), the 7970 also has more vram, and depending on the retailer can come with 4 games.

GPU Boost 2.0 actually is causing serious throttling issues on 700 series cards, that's why the 770 performed worse than the 680 on Linus's review.

Being a generation ahead means nothing in this case, because the 770 is a re-branded 680.

A 7970 is also much more future-proof than the 770 because the exact same AMD GCN graphics are used in the ps4 and xbox one, so all next generation console ports will run faster on the 7970.
