I know people sometimes recommend older q6600's for low budget as they overclock and are quad core, but does the g3258 compete well against it for a competitive price? A decent board is more expensive for the q6600 I've noticed but head to head how do these processors compare really?

It depends on the game/use, but usually an i3 is only a bit more than both, and is quite a bit better (across the board).

In single threaded performance, yes. But the g32 series has terrible multitasking capabilities. Thebq6600 is definitely better so long as you don't plan to upgrade for a long time

Q6600 for more cores. Even though it's hotter and has some features not available, such as SLAT.

I would go for the lower power consumption, better overclocking, and more modern platform of the G3258 if it's going to be a main rig. The advantages of LGA 1150 alone are more than enough for me to go for the Pentium.

Aesthetics of rigs matter

Actually, an X5450 would beat that for less money, but it does take a bit of modding.

true. a xeon is the best option, but like you said, it requires modding the socket slightly.

But it's not much other than snipping off a little bit of the socket holder thingies and applying an adapter .

CPUboss is meaningless.

I don't know,  sometimes I go there for the ads.

Personally I would go with the newer CPU,  it will perform o.k and should you stumble across some cash in the future it will be easier to upgrade.

Q6600 assumes you have a somewhat decent LGA775 board already... some G31 junker wont be getting an overclock from it.

And if it's anything like the UK a good P35/P45 board can run you a fair amount of money compared to a cheap H81 board.
