Linus's Haswell OC guide. 4.6Ghz fail. BSOD

IT07
Go to solution Solved by IT07,

Thanks for all the info! Anyways, I did some testing with CPU Level up and found out that my system runs very nicely on the 4.2Ghz with Mem at normal speed (1600) and with a CPU voltage of 1.146.

At those speeds, AIDA64 runs a smooth 15 minute test at 70C max.

I think that is enough for me :) thank you all!

Hey guys, newguy here :)

Got a question for the professional people here:

So I was following the OC guide from Linus for Haswell CPU's and half-way down the video he said that you should try and put the Core MP to 46 and the voltage at 1.2 which I did. Pressed F10 and reboot. Went ok but unfortunately Windows BSOD'd on me. So I lowered the mp to 4.2 which runs fine while doing the AIDA64 System Stability test. So my question is: what could have been the cause of the BSOD and what can I do about it and what does it say about my machine?

Full specs:

I7-4770K with corsairs H100I

Asus Max Formula VI Rog (with TA)

Corsair 16Gb DDR3-1600 999 4x4Gb (mb turns it to 1333 always idk why)

Nvidia GTX670 4Gb DDR5

Cooler Master Silent Pro 1000W Gold

Thank you for your time!

Best regards,

IT07.

Typical case of bad luck. Some chips need more voltage to run at desired speeds, or known as the Silicon Lottery. Try upping the voltage a little bit with those speeds and test again.

These guides are a general line of what might be possible, but it is different for everyone else.

My 4690k barely runs at 4.4 GHz, and only with a voltage quite a bit higher than what i would want. So yeah.. Some are luckier than others. Try upping the voltage. You can go all the way up to 1.3 or 1.35 for daily use, if needed.

My 4690k is at 4.4ghz @1.190v. on a Hyper 212 Evo. It's all about luck of the draw. And cooling.

Up the voltage. No more than 1.25 on air and 1.30 under water. These of course are "safe" voltage limitations. Feel free to pump your voltages higher if you want.

Every chip falls onto an overclockability bell curve. 4.6 is on the right side (above average). They got kinda lucky. Just keep adjusting voltage or clock speed until you get a stable 24hr test. Be thankful that you dont have a chip on the way left side that can't overclock at all.
