I have been planing a new PC build and I was curious if it would be worth the extra $150 or so dollars do switch from the Asus Maxamus Vii with an Intel 4790k to an Asus Rampage V Extreme with Intel 5820k CPU?

Any help is much appreciated thank you.

x99 is very cost efficient at this current moment. unless you really need bleeding edge gear, (if you are even deciding x99 vs z97 then you should probably get z97) then just go z97.

I would go x99 for the extra pcie slots and the extra cores. It wouldn't be much better now, but it will be quite a bit better in a few years.

Hey there and welcome to the forum!

The big three deciding factors is your budget, what you're deciding to use the PC for and how long you're looking to keep the PC before getting a whole new one altogether. If you can provide us with that info, then we can come to a much more justified decision.

Welcome to the forums! If you're only gaming, there is no difference and it'd be a waste of money.

OP if gaming you're fine staying Z97 and I'd even suggest possibly switching to a Xeon E3 1231 v3 basically the same thing as 4790k just not overclockable no intergrated graphics (not that you'd have an iGpu on X99) and cheaper if content creation probably X99 assuming you have the cash to spare and do it often enough for it to pay itself off quickly

X99 is like a $400 buy-in for close to zero actual gaming performance. Go with Z97.

Honestly it's not a $400 thing atleast here I just PC part pickered it myself and it's roughly $200

I plan to keep this PC for a fairly long time, I would currently use it for gaming, fraps, twitch maybe, and running game servers for myself and friends. My budget is not strict but anywhere around 2k.

Thank you all

I would build this with a Titan X GPU when available (1000$) this is the ultimate gaming rig IMHO:

Are you sure it's only $150 more? It sounds like you didn't factor in the cost of DDR4 memory.

The 5820K would be arguably worthwhile in a prosumer rig where you're doing a lot of video rendering and such. If you're just gaming (or even doing some amateur workstation stuff), just stick with Z97. Spend the difference on a faster video card or better audio or something.

Price difference

$140

All parts are the same, just change cpu, board, and ram.  If we change to a 212 Evo ($30), on the Z97 or the X99, then price difference between the 2 are

$70
