i dont know anything about this topic from the WW II era, is it just me or do no American schools teach about the Bataan Death March? do european schools teach about this? what was the death march about? and how do you guys in europe learn about WW II, in America we focus on the holocaust, and how america participated in the war, and pearl harbor and all that stuff. but we dont learn about all aspects of what happened during that era. i think WW II is the most fascinating (but depressing) historical event that ever happened and most of the research i know about the war, i learned my self.

Space Journal #1: So Apparently i  was dropped on the moon like i'm a mars rover, in a matter of hours i have found the transformers on the dark side of the moon. Turns out its not that dark since dem robots are filled with lights, i waved hi to the Russians on the space station, turns out all those stories about space finding humans instead of the other way around is true(soviet Russia joke). They threw me some Heineken beer and I've been sitting staring at the people of this forum and earth since.

12th, we learn world history in 9th and 10th grade, and in 11th and 12th (senior year) its all about america, i dont remember learning about this specific thing at all in 10th grade when we spent a month on WW 2 history.

At my high school, it was World History in 9th, I took AP Comparative Politics in 10th, AP US Histroy in 11th, and AP Gov in 12th. Now my high school offers AP World Hist for 10th.

I guess, as you said, we learn more about the US' involvment in the war, but then agian, we live in the U.S. My teachers did go into the backstories of both wars, but nothing as in depth as our coverage of America's role.

Wikipedia should give you the gist. From the wikipedia article I could find it was the Japanese who marched POWs to a prison camp and many POWs were brutally tortured or killed along the way.

i understand that WW 1 and 2 are such a huge topic, but we can definitely cover it better rather than talking about rosie the riveter and uncle sam throughout the entire thing.

Was this the death march from which people had to be liberated from Auschwitz? If so, I actually learned this in my english class freshman year.

Interesting, I consider myself a ww2 buff and this is the first I've heard of the Bataan Death March.

If you like history, look up the story of the American Submarine that sank a train.

That's right, a train.

I read Night by Elie Wiesel.

Hell in elementary school a very old man who had experienced this came to our school to tell his story. He wasn't Jewish but he helped them he said. He was Legit of course otherwise the school wouldn't have asked him to come and tell it.

He told us that on the way on the train people were jumping out of it.

He said he sought refuge in a church or something? It was like a charity thing they did, but he got caught eventually and woke up with a gun to his head, the nazi's telling him to come with them.

So how did the nazis let him go afterward? That must have been scary waking up with a gun to your head.

WWII is really fascinating because it was a defining conflict like WWI , it changed a lot and shaped the world.

The tales of heroics and battle stories could fill a million libraries.

Bataan Death March is when our boys (United States) were captured by the Japanese in the Philippines and were basically starved/marched to death.  Check out the movie "The Great Raid" from 2005.  I think that goes into detail about the treatment and rescue of our troops in the Philippines in WWII.

The Death March happened after the Fall of Bataan after a long and hard battle against the Japanese.

Basically the Death March was how the Japanese treated the POWs from the various fallen bases. Throughout the route of the Death March, there were many Filipinos who offered water and/or food for the troops, and were also 'punished' by the Japanese.

There is not one Death March but rather a series of them and were used as propaganda against those who sided with the Americans.

My late grandfather lived through the Death March (he was part of the volunteer garrison of Corregidor), escaped midway, and fought as part of the guerilla operatives until the end of the war.
