"Rumor says Apple invented USB Type-C"

TopWargamer

Source: http://www.technobuffalo.com/2015/03/13/rumor-says-apple-invented-usb-type-c/

USB Type-C is the latest in USB technology, and it's recently been introduced in the new Macbook. USB Type-C was created by the USB Implementers Forum and the International Electrotechnical Commission, but a trusted Apple analyst said that Apple contributed a large portion towards the creation of USB Type-C.

The analyst in question, John Gruber, stated in a podcast earlier this week that mentions Apple as the inventor of USB Type-C. The full quote is as follows:

"I have heard, can’t say who, but let’s call them “informed little birdies”, that USB-C is an Apple invention and that they gave it to the standard bodies. And that the politics of such is that they can’t really say that. They’re not going to come out in public and say that. It is an Apple invention and they do want it to become a standard."

This both makes sense and doesn't make sense. Here's why it makes sense: Apple has the money to fund such a project and wants it to be a thing so that they can use it. But the later is why it doesn't make sense: Apple likes to protect its technologies and have them only be used on Apple products. Even Techno Buffalo points this out.

So I dunno. It could go either way. What do you think?

Hundreds of companies contribute ideas and several dozen actively work on the next iterations for USB, not outlandish to think Apple took their "hey, Lightning works like this so why not let USB have some of that greatness"

I can see Apple pushing Thunderbolt and Type C connectors from here on out. TB still has a lot of potential that has yet to be adopted. Companies need to get on it, ASAP.

Well, what about MiniDisplayPort? Apple designed the connector and now we find it on pretty much every mid and high-end consumer GPU.

I find it halfway believable. I mean, I would want to come to them for a reversible connector since they came up with the Lightning connector, as I recall.

EDIT: Oh, invented. Hell no. Contributed a fairly large amount, sure.

Rumor says apple can go fuck themselves and stop claiming that they came up with every new thing.

Apple didn't claim anything, this is a analyst reporting on the matter. Grow up already, stop acting like a kid.

Yea, because things are only official once they get shown at CES, right?

Rumor says that you should probably calm your damn tits.

Think what you will, but Apple contribute a decent bit to the tech community in ways you don't see. Like I said before, they designed MiniDisplayPort, which found it's way onto almost every modern consumer GPU and was the base for Intel's Thunderbolt, which they played a large part in implementing into the market and launching it to the masses. Apple makes companies adopt technologies, suprisingly enough.

What does it matter? I thought that it was created in collaboration between multiple companies. If Apple was the sole creator I'm sure that they would have made that very clear.

How is that in any way a sign that Apple didn't come up with it?

Honestly it wouldn't surprise me, nor would it change anything though. It's what the world have been demanding, it's nice that it's finally here (And SURPRISE, Apple are the ones who are pushing it as well).

Apple trademarked it and handed everything off to Intel who held everything else. Back in 2009, it was demoed using a Mac Pro logic board. How does Sony fit into this?

And apple took credit for ADB (apple desktop bus) when it was just an svideo cable for keyboards and mice

Its not the first time. Thunderbolt was a Intel push but guess who assisted? Apple. Apple even had trademarks. Apple rolled it out across the board. Apple has been pushing (and successfully I might add) to get people to get on the wagon.

But people need to act like Apple is satan, especially around here.

Sony was the one set to produce the light peak logic boards (And consumer products). At the 2008 & 2009 CES they had prototypes of a ultrabook (Intel was working with Sony to get the Ultrabook name ready) with a LightPeak interface.

This laptop came out in 2012, it was called the VAIO Z series. It had LightPeak (The Fibre version of thunderbolt)

Yep, good thing it failed. I have a couple of ADB things, and really is a pain to get them working.

And if you lose the cable, you are screwed because they are really rare.

Apple pushed Thunderbolt hard. Feb on the MacBooks and May on the iMacs for rolling it out. They also let everyone know that it was based on mDP, not USB like people were assuming it would be.

How are they rare?

It is literally an Svideo cable, no different. Besides, http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR3.TRC2.A0.H0.XADB+cabl.TRS0&_nkw=ADB+cable&ghostText=&_sacat=0

Also, i have had no problems with ADB.

Typing this on my daily drive, a ADB apple adjustable keyboard, conected with ADB to USB adapter

They had 3 Displays, a GPU, and a Disk drive. Plus enough power for everything running over LightPeak.
