Wich Power Supply Should I Get

pugnaq
Go to solution Solved by Aniallation,

Not for now. Maybe in a year or so (: one GTX 970 is enough to play games at a very good quality right? Then im ok with it for now :D

Then go for 650W. 550 is cutting it closer then comfort for 970 SLI.

So i'm bulding my computer and I want to know how many Watts do I need and wich is the best and most reliable brand.

Graphic card: GTX 970

Mobo: MSI Z97 Gaming 5

Processor: Core i5-4690K

XFX XFX TS 550W

Cooler Master VSM 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Corsair CSM 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

I want to take care very well of my equipment. I don't want to lose it

@pugnaq

Get the Cooler Master VSM. It's a great unit and not only is it high wattage and efficiency, but also the best-performing out of all 3 in terms of technical PSU aspects, such as voltage regulation and ripple suppression.

Reviews do seem to praise the VSM well. The only main complaint about the sleeving which I do agree on. Shows way too much of the colored wires which looks ugly. However if this is not a deal-breaker for you then the VSM is a great choice.

All of them would be power your system just fine. At the same price point as the Cooler Master VSM 650w, you could get the XFX XTR 650w unit. It's a fully modular, semi-passive unit that's based off of the Seasonic G platform internally.  http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1650bbefx

Do you have any plans to SLI? As for a single 970, you could go with a quality 450w as well. Something along the lines of the Rosewill Capstone 450w for $60: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006BCKDGW/

Although everyone else here is saying a VSM, I reccomend an RM750. Just bought one a few days ago and I love it.

450w is plenty for a single 970 setup. However, since you plan to SLI, I recommend getting a 650w or so unit. In the $100 price point, the XFX XTR 650w I had mentioned is an great choice for your system.

That or the EVGA Supernova 750w B2 for under $90: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-110b20750vr

I don't have enough Dollars right now. Lower watts would hurt my setup?

When you say SLI you mean adding a new graphic card right? I'm not planning on doing that maybe like in November so I can get another power supply and sell the one that I would have by then. I don't know who but someone told me to buy a power supply with a lot of watts so I dont risk losing my components

Look for a RM550. Might be cheaper for you, there are plenty of different wattages for the RM series.

SLI as running two GTX 970s on a single computer. Since you have plans to do so in November...maybe..., may as well as get a proper PSU ahead of time to do so, especially if you can find one at a very well price (like that EVGA 750w B2). It save you the trouble of having to redo your cable management, as well as reselling it at a lost (you'll likely going to sell it for less than what you had bought it as well as shipping if you are sending it to another state).

Here's a review on the MSI GTX 970 Gaming: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/09/29/msi_geforce_gtx_970_gaming_4g_video_card_review/10#.VQJHUuFu3hk

It shows a power draw of 350wAC at the wall. This is a system with an i7 3770K overclocked to 4.8GHz. Take into account efficiency, the power draw that the PSU is supplying will be even lower.

The VSM is both better and cheaper.

But in reality, @pugnaq if you're able to do mail-in rebates then definitely get this over the VSM. Similar performance for much cheaper. http://pcpartpicker.com/part/enermax-power-supply-erx630awt

So I should definitely get the Cooler Master VSM 650W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ?

I can't spend too much :(

If you really don't want to do mail-in rebates then get the VSM. However if you are able to, the Revolution X't that I linked is a MUCH better choice for the money. You are pretty much getting the same PSU but the Enermax gives you $35 back.

Source your information: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/CoolerMaster/VSM750/5.html

This way they can actually read the review as well. Not that it is a relevant comparison anymore as the tested RM750/850 is discontinued and had been replaced by a different platform.

That rebate is exclusive to Newegg, and he wants to buy from Amazon due to gift cards.

I can only buy things in Amazon and Amazon is not offering rebates for that one. However thanks!

The Cooler Master V650M, XFX XTR 650, or the EVGA Supernova 750w B2 are all great PSU for your system.

Here's a review of the

XTR: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/XFX/XTR650/

B2: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=393

You can see the VSM in my other post.

Personally, I would go for the XTR 650 due to Full modularity and semi-passive mode (fanless at lower loads), but you really can't go wrong with any of these.

The XTR 650 is currently out of stock on Amazon, but the 550 version is available.

Ok, the time I actually used PCPartpicker, it told me that the XTR 650w was in stock on Amazon, and the cheapest V650M was $99.99...

The V650M is a great deal for $85.17 shipped. Go for it. It's plenty, even if you are going to put two 970s in SLI.
