GTX 970 Owners Club

ok so went for 1.3 last night, turns out the extra voltage only got me an 10mhz on the core, did a looped run of fire strike ultra and started getting artifacting at 1600mhz, about 30 seconds later had a display driver crash. Strange thing is that every time I had a display driver crash gpu-z shows that immediately before crashing I reach power limit (PWR) at about 140% (even though I have it set in the bios to 176%) maybe you 6-pins can only give so much, I had them set to 125W each,

anyway I backed off to 1.281 and stuck at 1573mhz core for both cards, (with a single card however I had a stable run at 1630mhz)

Well....is it me or do manufacturers have utterly no clue when it comes to applying thermal paste? My jaw dropped when I saw just how much was used on my G1 Gaming, it makes HP, Asus and Toshiba look good.

My G1 almost didn't have TIM on die. Applying mx-2 made no difference.

Zotac 970 Amp Edition Owner here! not yet overclocked because i reach 70deg even in stock!

70°c isn't bad, my G1 gets to 73°c stock and 76°c with OC, but I have little to none airflow in my case.

Well there was TIM that was next to die, but there wasn't practically anything on die and cooler.

7 hours game stable at this overclock. Changing the TIM for AC5 and cleaning the dust off the cooler worked. (And I should turn the settings back up and see if I can use 1.5GB+ vRAM)

Nice!

Especially when I thought the card was faulty/dead etc. I love it again-but Gigabyte can still feck off with their poor support and really bad RMA process.

Why weren't you RMA'ing to shop where you bought it, but directly to Gigabyte?

i hate my msi 4g card (hynix urgh) it hits 1554mhz on stock voltage stable but wont go any higher with a custom bios even at 1.3v with a 125% power limit and +87mv.

bit of a con if you ask me how theres two memory manufacturers yet one of them cant oc higher, might send it back and try get a samsung g1 970.

Memory only affects memory overclocking. I have By mix, but I can clock core to 1600Mhz, but only +300Mhz on memory.

not from what i have seen, it seems to be mainly the samsung cards that can get to 1600mhz stable and mainly g1 cards.

i just find it weird how my card wont oc more even with no restrictions

That's just silicon lottery, but G1 OC's better because it's built better for overclocking.

And thats why I went for the G1 in the 1st place.  Gauntlet is meant to give a better GPU for better OC.

But Gigabyte also use Samsung & Hynix memory..    Lucky I got Samsung :)

Long story short, going through Gigabyte is a lot cheaper-and the 970 wasn't DOA.

I thought Amazon had good costumer service.

if you buy it with prime you can sent it back 30days without giving them a reason, they won't even test it, they just sell it to 3rd vendors which then will sell them as B-Product. (atleast in germany)

So i quess if you are aiming for Samsung you can do this once or twice before they denie to take it back.

But ofc still sillicon lottory

Should i apply MX4 Thermal Paste? x.X

My Hynix memory overclocks to +500-+600 quite easily. My GPU seems to only really like 1470mhz range.

Have you used 1.3v bios for OC'ing core?

Nope. The Hynix memory can actually do +600 which is 8200mhz effective memory. I am still in the testing phase I did get the GPU core up to the mid 1500's but that was it. I don't have the 1.3v bios. The card is less than a month old. Is that the bios that goes from +10% power to +25% power in the OCing utilities?

I swear Gigabyte is f***ing with me, I can run +150MHz 24 hours stable stable as long as the voltage is left alone, and as soon as I increase it-boom, driver crash:

post-155575-0-75427000-1436184716_thumb.

@Gofspar

Would this bios "1.262v /w (stock voltage) nospin fan mode, TDP increase and anti throttle boost tables" work with Samsung memory?

Edit: BTW, I know I'm going to get a driver crash when 'VOp' is being recorded.
