Through a multi-agency effort, UK law enforcement made a spree of arrests this week, in what the National Crime Agency (NCA) is calling a “cyber crime strike week.”

In all, 57 people were arrested between 2-6 March, charged with a plethora of computer related crimes, such as DDoS attacks, malware distribution, and theft of intellectual property. The largest operation busted 25 people in London and Essex, who are suspected of fraud and money laundering, according to the BBC.

Overseen by the NCA—essentially the UK’s FBI—the operations took place through England, Scotland, and Wales, and included officers from London’s Metropolitan Police, local Regional Organised Crime Units (ROCUs), and the NCA’s own National Cyber Crime Unit (NCCU).

Cyber criminality including:-

- Network intrusion and data theft from multinational companies and government agencies,

- Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks

- Cyber-enabled fraud

- Malicious software and virus development

Too bad the police didnt shoot them  <_<

Why. Why would the police shoot them. Police should shoot when they have to, not when they can.

How did they trace them I wonder?

Edit-

Forgot to finish the bloody post.

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

Part of me hopes that it is not all of Lizard Squad, I was kind of hoping to see them make the console services look like giant wastes of money again.

How did they trace them I wonder?

I have been pondering this for sometime now.  We always hear about anonymous and such groups that are elite tech users that can fly under the radar, find backdoors, hack whatever they want and stay invisible.  But the odds that the relevant authorities (NCA, NSA, FBI, ASIO, CBI etc) can't do the same are pretty slim.  Lets face it, they are better resourced, can use almost any method they like, aren't restricted to using 3rd party VPNs to hide their identity and literally can't get in trouble for doing their job.  It stands to reason that most of the authorities already know exactly who is doing what where and they are just waiting for the relevant laws and evidence to be acceptable in court before tacking them down.

Exactly. People make it sound so easy to remain anonymous on the internet using tor, vpns, linux, etc.. Yet stuff like this happens. I really doubt they all ****ed up and made a rookie mistakes. And, as you said, big-name hackers occasionally get caught. I find it doubtful that they weren't employing every available resource to remain hidden. Government resources are just better (if used correctly) than the ones at our disposal.

Sometimes I entertain the idea that the NSA, FBI et al, have a dynamic map of the internet,  able to trace anything through anything from one point to other.

Probably why they get caught in the first place. Some of the very best hackers are even at times pardoned with the condition that they use their skills to develop better security for the Government.

Weren't they working on something like that? I could see them attempting something like that.

*tin foil hat* I've wondered if they have some trick up their sleeve. Some exploit or something that they can use without much of a risk of being detected, and only use sparingly to avoid drawing attention to it. This way they can pick-and-choose certain targets without drawing much suspicion.

To be honest I don't know,  A lot of how the net actually works (TOR, routing, etc) goes over my head.  I just look at what student hackers and internet worriors can do and assume that with superior resources the government can do better.

True, I know very little as well. I do know enough though that nothing ever works perfectly. No system is perfectly secure, no one is perfectly anonymous.

Most people only want the ones that are unnecessarily disrupting gaming.   However in the bigger picture the same can be said for politicians.
